Habs sign Greg Pateryn (two-year contract)

Quote:
Montreal Canadiens general manager Pierre Gauthier announced today the signing of defenseman Greg Pateryn to a two-year contract (2012-13 and 2013-14). As per club policy, financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

Pateryn tallied 15 points (2 goals, 13 assists) in 41 games this season with the CCHA’s Michigan Wolverines. The 6’02’’ and 212 lbs defenseman served 65 penalty minutes. He played one game in the 2012 NCAA Frozen Four, presenting a +1 differential and three shots on goal.

Wow, Gauthier still making decisions this late in the game? I say he's staying.

Good. Expected news. Let's hope Danny Kristo and Steve Quailer are next.

Pateryn is a big boy and a good skater. I could see him being similar to a Craig Rivet styled defenseman in his prime.

We got him in the Grabovski deal correct? What are we going to do in Hamilton next season? Tinordi, Beaulieu, Ellis and now Pateryn. I love how those guys complement each other.

I think he might be someone we can use and have needed for years on the back end:

Talent Analysis

At 6'3 and 214 pounds, Pateryn has assumed a role as one of the University of Michgan's toughest and most physical defenders. He utilizes his body very well, both in delivering checks as well as matching up against some of the CCHA's bigger forwards.

Plus you have Brendon Nash, Joe Stejskal and possibly Frederic St-Denis (depending if he makes the big club) already there.

I wonder if we will sign Scott Kishel too.

Should be a fun year in Hamilton.

Does Pateryn now have to quit College? Why the heck did he give this interview then?

Nope, not regarding NCAA players. I have seen a few that have signed 2 years deal, but I cant name any off the top of my head.

Could be way off here, but I believe it has something to do with age and/or draft year. Emelin signed a 1 year ELC, if you recall.

EDIT: HERE IT IS:
Quote:
Players who sign their first contract at age 18-21 are required to sign three-year Entry Level contracts; players age 22-23 will be required to sign two-year deals; and players age 24 will be required to sign a one-year Entry Level contract.
He'll be 22 when the contract takes effect.

No, he can finish his year. He's only ineligible for athletics, but since the season is over.

Depends on Age.

Emelin and Diaz signed 1 year deals because they were older.

Pateryn is at the age where he must get a 2 year deal.

Good call, Emelin and Diaz's contracts should have clued me in that it depended on age, but I knew they were older anyway. Forgot Pateryn was already 21-22.

yes he was in the Grabo deal. Pateryn could see time in the ECHL next year since ice time may be hard to come by with the other big 3 rookie D's. Should be interesting to see how it shakes out though.

No, siging a NHL contract only means he cann't play college sports. His interview was about him not leaving school now in order to play for a week or two in the AHL. He has to graduate in order to enroll in med school and finals usually aren't until April.

No, it's based off age of the player. Since Pateryn is 21 it's a 2 year deal. Same as Nash got last year

Some of these defensemen are going to be playing in the ECHL because of depth. No shame in that, some good players went there and turned up being good NHLers.

I bet Tinordi starts the season in Mtl as a Hal Gill replacement.
