And is there any chance in hell we can get him signed between now and the start of the World Championships, now that his season is over?
And if not, what's the danged rule that says we can't?
I think in the latest Russo piece he said not until after the WC's, maybe as to not distract? I don't know, but after those end we have until June 1 to get it done. I'm sure it gets done.
Russo has stated numerous times we can't sign him until after WC, but I don't know of the rationale there, unless his SM-Liiga contract runs through that date.
Asked him. Said it's a CBA issue and agreement with the NHL and Finnish hockey association.

Thats what I am wondering about. The rationale behind it. The way I see it, if the kid does not have some kind of Hockey commitment that is occupying him *right now*, he should be free to sign that contract.
I suspect it's an SM-Liiga issue where their contracts may run through a specific date, rather than the more arbitrary "last game of season." I can imagine a number of reasons a league might make things run until that date. As we've seen with our CHL prospects, that's obviously not an issue in all leagues.

Generally it's until the end of April. But I'm sure he would be releated if he asked that. However, I don't see any how he would skip the World Championship held in Finland to play some NHL regular season games, even if that would burn a year off his rookie contract (don't know how that work nowadays).
Mikael Granlund and a failed penalty shot - now that it's over it's safe to say that that was the most important moment (of the series). Where have I heard that before? Horrible performance from Granlund and based on this he doesn't deserve a spot on the WC roster. But more than likely he already has a spot especially considering that Jalonen likes to build his teams with very specific roles and players in mind, so we'll likely see him play.
Oh Granlund, why did you have to leave a sour taste in my mouth before heading to AHL?

He's extremely unlikely to be seeing any AHL time.

Dude, the team didn't do that well around him either. Granted, he wasn't he "magician" we've used to seeing him as, but he wasn't horrible either.
I'll be looking forward to seeing what he can do in the NHL.
And Avder, to answer your question, WC runs 4th of May - 20th of May. Plenty of time until then for MG to rest.
I really think he needs to just reset and get some perspective. To me it seems like he tripped all over himself mentally when he completely blew it in the SO attempt in the WJC. Like I said earlier, I think he needs to step back and go back to basics for a little bit and then just take it slow a little bit.
I think that the same happened to MG that Armia went through at the start of the season. He had his expectations too high for example, leading the WJC-team, and then the second half of the SM-liiga season, when he thought that he wasn't doing what he should have, he started to try too hard which results into poor performances, he just needs more confidence, that's what got Armia back to "normal".
I have a feeling that every time I log onto these boards I am going to see a "Confirmed signing with link: Mikael Granlund signs ELC" like how we saw with Zucker last night. It's gonna happen any day and I am excited.
Well he can't turn crap into chicken salad. So...we're going to need to get some good players for him to play with.
I just hope he's not going to be a whiny prima donna.
That is my biggest fear too.

Somehow I dont think were gonna see anything until at least the 20th of May.
The Granlund deal will get done I'm sure of it. We've suffered for a few years now, we're going to see our young guys actually going at it for real next year. Granlund, Zucker, Bulmer, Coyle, Phillips, and Brodin will all be vying for spots with Granlund as the only lock. Maybe Zucker steps in right away, and we saw how well Bulmer played earlier this year.

According to Russo, the WC deal is a NHL-Finnish CBA agreement.
