No need for a replacement at this time, so I'm glad management isn't rushing that decision. It removes PG so he can't **** things up further, so that's a plus.
The loss against Florida was not the straw that broke the camel's back. That decision to fire Gauthier was taken long ago and the logical thing to do was wait until the end of the season to do it.
So why now?
Best guess: A management candidate they are after might not have been available anymore if they had waited any longer.
Who?
Best Guess: Roy (probably as coach, but you still need the new GM before). They figure Phoenix is done, the move to Quebec could be annunced soon and they might lose Roy to the future Nordique.
Pure, unalduterated speculation based on limited facts. I am fairly confident in the first assumption and made the second not being aware of any number of other candidates that could get snagged before by any number of other organizations.
They need a GM who is YOUNG and understands the CURRENT state of the game.
One with clear vision. Who doesn't accept losing players for nothing. Who understands the game of asset management.
We need a GM with patience. One capable of seeing the big picture and not always looking at short-term fixes which set your franchise back consistently.
Remember... Markov was injured... The PP needed a QB.... Spacek was useless....
I remember having Spacek and I felt a lot better with him being gone at the end of the year than acquiring Kaberle for 2+ years. Everybody knows the PP sucked, but a lot of us hated that move. The problem with the team was bigger than just a PP QB.
It's exactly this sort of thinking I hate. Short-term managing.

This. I mean, if Roy is not even in the Canadiens system next year and we learn that Molson didn't even bothered to call him up... it will be worse than the announcement of Cunneyworth as Head Coach. They is so much hype about him, that it would be a huge letdown if Quebec has him.

Why is Roy's name always connected to the potential future Quebec franchise?
Ding Dong! The Witch is dead. Which old Witch? The Wicked Witch!
Ding Dong! The Wicked Witch is dead.
I literally did a victory dance in my University's library when I heard this. It was a long time coming, but confirmation is so comforting.
Seriously though, we brought in Timmins as head Amateur scout and PG as head professional scout in '03. Since then, our drafting has been amazing and our acquiring of Pro's has been pretty bad (especially through trades).
