John Shannon reported two weeks on Sportsnet that Parise won't sign with the Wild. Its too close to home. Too many distractions. Detroit will wind up with Parise or Suter. They have cap space even with the cap declining.
I don't get it.. is it bad being close to home? what distraction? I don't get it

I'm not saying this guy is Eklund like but I'm pretty sure Parise told Tom Reid just the opposite between periods of a Wild-Devils game in January 2011. He has also told Mike Russo that the idea of playing for his hometown team would be "interesting".

At times with hockey mad markets like Toronto, Montreal and Minnesota some players have used that as an excuse not to sign. I can mostly speak for here in Minnesota where the hockey public really has a deep love for it's home town heros and going back to the 70's with guys like Paul Holmgren, Gary Sargent and others who Minnesota fans obsessed about seeing them play for the hometown team.
I can also say with a guy like Neal Broten who was as popular as any Minnesota grown player in the 70's and 80's after leading the Gophers to an NCAA championship in 79 and helping the Miracle On Ice team in 1980 he had a terrific career playing mostly in Minnesota for the North Stars. So it's what you make of it.
Zach Parise likes the way the Detroit Red Wings play. And he loves watching Pavel Datsyuk.
That can only help the Red Wings' chances of landing Parise, the New Jersey Devils star who is expected to be this summer's premier unrestricted free-agent forward. “I think they play the right way,'' Parise said of the Red Wings. “They play hard. The puck possession is great. The way the (defense) get involved is awesome. They play a great style of hockey. Really fun to watch.''
Quote:
He called Datsyuk “my most favorite player to watch.''
“He's awesome,'' Parise said. “He does everything out there. Just some of the passes he makes to set up guys are unbelievable. “He does everything and plays the game the right way. For any player just watching him, you try to mimic some things he does out there. It's not fun playing against him, but he's fun to watch."
Detroit seems like the most likely destination...
- great team
- cap room to pay him
- if lidstrom retires, cap room to potentially bring both him/suter
personal bias, I could see montreal making a hefty pitch for him.
perhaps even trading Y.Weber to the Devils for the negotiation rights (Deboer would be all over that i imagine).
I'm not sure if I said this in this thread or not but I think he would be a great fit in St. Louis. That being said I wouldn't be surprised if he re-signed with NJ.
Wild will probably throw the most money at him but I have a hard time believing that not only will he leave New Jersey, but that he'd also come to a team that hasn't even been to the playoffs in four years.
Parise broke out under Julien. They have a winning program, lots of talent to surround him with, and not just cap space but good cap management, meaning they can add him without shooting themselves in the foot in a year or two.
So let me get this straight, if Parise plays to age 40, you're guaranteeing that the only team to win the next 12 or 13 Cups are the Penguins? Care to explain your thinking?

You mean the first time he scored 30 goals or his 90 point season.
Why are so many people saying Boston has no shot they will be at least 6 million under the cap before they IR savard that will be about ten million it is on the east coast a two way system he will not have to carry his line on the defensive side.
I think Detroit will go after Sutter more than Parise that team looked a little lost with out Lidstrom and when he retires hell if he retires he is a robot they are going to need a # 1 D they already have the fire power
NYR could still go after Nash hard be interesting who they put the most time into
Boston is a team that will contend for the cup every year Parise is there and that could be a huge facor

If Lidstrom retires, I'm guessing Detroit goes hard for both of them.
