I'm sure there is room for a bean counter at one of Worthington Industries many divisions and joint ventures.

Yeah, most of them above the Canadian border.

I'm disappointed this was the only solution these creative people seemed to be able to come up with, but not surprised. If it keeps the Jackets in town, I'll live with it.

Now that the deal is closed, when does the rip-off known as "personal seat licenses" end? They were necessary when this was a privately owned arena and would seem unnecessary now. Furthermore, it keeps the number of potential STH's in any given year artificially low--I didn't buy season tickets when I lived in town because I couldn't justify the initial cost of the PSL knowing that if I ended up moving for a job (which I did) I likely wouldn't recoup the cost.

You still have to buy a PSL to get a season ticket? Sounds like a bad idea. Especially now.

What part of "I don't want to pay for a PSL" when buying season tickets do we not understand?

If you want a full season, yes.

I also note that some of the benefits they use to sell the ticket plans are only available to those with PSLs.

If they get rid of the PSL and fire Howson and Priest, I'll buy a season ticket package. So, some enterprising ticket rep reading this board should get on that.

People will still (and even on this board) talk about how Columbus is in danger of moving.

Until the team starts making money, this will always be a concern. Agreeing to stay in columbus until 2039 is one thing, agreeing to lose money until 2039 is another...

Hopefully it starts 4/8.

Props to Blake Schilling, Director of Event Services at Nationwide Arena. I emailed Arena management asking about some of the technological shortcomings of Nationwide Arena and what plans were in the works to fix them. I received an email back in 5 minutes asking for my phone number. Within 30 minutes of that I got a call from him laying out a lot of their plans and talks that have been in the works. Apparently within the next 2 years, there is supposed to be a new scoreboard and new seats. Still no date for new HDTV video in the hallways or public WiFi.

A new scoreboard is sorely needed, Ive been to many an away arena and the new, larger Hi-Def scoreboards are fantastic!! But whats wrong with the seats? A second electronic display band around the arena would be better! Many of the arenas have those and there are a lot of operations the in-game folks can do with those to light up the place and keep it hoppin!!

I wondered the same thing about the seats, but apparently they keep breaking and spend a bunch of money and man hours fixing them.

Looking at the comments...

As George Carlin said, imagine how stupid the average person is. Now consider that half are dumber than that.

If you want to know why we don't have flying cars, these folks are the reason.

There's a band called We Were Promised Jetpacks. Love it (the name).

I can think of a million different ways this can go south.... Especially when you read this:

"Records kept by the secretary of state’s office show that CAM filed articles of organization on March 28 — the same day the facilities authority officially approved the purchase of the arena.

Priest was the only person to sign the articles. He was unavailable for comment late last week."

Some lawyers racked up some major billable hours on this. And you and I paid for it.

What a boondoggle. This smells entirely of wanting to keep their records from the public and I don't see how that is a good thing.

"Here's your 250 mil dollar bailout, eventhough this was public money, it was acquired without a council vote, I don't think its necessary for your organization to "justify" itself to the people that footed it. Feel free to gather three of your buddies and manage it all however you see fit...."

Un-freakin-believable....

Mike Priest better concern himself more with how this team is going to start chalking up the W's... because backlash from the 1.8 mil in the metro area is going to be a lot louder than the 8,000 this hockey club draws on the average night.

Maybe people will get upset at some point, but I don't hear anyone talking about the Arena deal or this latest issue (other than a few nutballs on the Dispatch online site). I agree that they should operate in public and be accountable to Franklin County residents, but there's sort of a malaise in Columbus about a lot of things, this issue included.

In the decade plus since the failed vote in the mid-ninties, the organization hasn't done enough to build goodwill towards the city. Taking the vote public would have been a resounding failure for Priest and Co.

I'll agree there will always be that anti-government "fringe" to begin with, but this really has me thinking. Bailing out the organization thru the Arena deal is one thing, but this is on a whole other level.

If you want to get rid of Mike Priest, this is the issue with which to do it. It's the county's arena, Priest has no right to keep the operations of it in private.

In the grand scheme of overall US governmental corruption and deceit, this is not big stuff. Typical sleight-of-hand ("public commission" -not really. haha-to run arena) stuff.)

http://www.dispatch.com/content/stor...ate-board.html

Quote:
Jennison said the facilities authority will oversee CAM’s operation, but to what extent remains unclear.

Some authority board members said there have been no discussions of how they will oversee CAM. They were surprised by Jennison’s comments that the nonprofit will operate in private.

“It certainly doesn’t pass the smell test,” said John Raphael, who serves on the facilities-authority board. “We obviously need to have some discussions about this.”
No, it does not

Quote:
“Of course this is a violation of the (open-meetings) law, ... and it’s meant to avoid public accountability,” said David Marburger, a Cleveland lawyer and open-government advocate. “Imagine if I owned my house and I transfer it by lease to a nonprofit organization for a year and suddenly the nonprofit is saying I am not allowed to see how they are using my house.”
Voila.

The corruption of the deal is to be expected from our ever increasingly corrupt government. The concern for Jackets fans would be for how iron clad the deal is relative to the Jackets being bound to Columbus. Based on the early returns, it doesn't engender much-if any-confidence. I'd hardly be shocked if there are sufficient loopholes to drive a few semi moving trucks (ala the Baltimore Colts) through the "contract".

Oh thats why, I thought it might have something to do with the practicality, such as the price of jet fuel and needing a pilot's and driver's license to operate one. Good to know its dumb people's fault though
