Sigh... Yeah. Touche. They gotta really sell him on the idea of being a Red Wing one day.

If Ryan Sproul would have born 2 weeks earlier, there wouldn't be that desperate need. Marchenko could have done the jump for next season, but the knee injury ruined the hopes and he will stay this and next season at KHL. Dekeyser didn't sign. So, Almqvist is the only to replace Smith, but they would definitely need another puckmoving guy.

I'm quite sure they are in hunt for somebody of these College dudes.

Jonathan Ericsson played his last Griffins season down in AHL but earned 1-way NHL money. That would be the solution for Schultz.

There are a lot of things to sell him on. He would instantly be our top D prospect in GR. Smith is a former teammate (who knows how close they are), he would get ample PP time if he makes the Wings and if he improves he could step in as a Red Wing after one year. If Schultz decides to sign with the Red Wings they could improve the team in other areas tremendously.

If everything goes to plan and we do land a big fish in FA in the next two years,

Weber/Suter
Kronwall
Quincey
Ericsson
Kindl
White?
Smith
Janik
Schultz
Oullet
Sproul
Jensen
Almqvist
Backman
Marshall
Marchenko
Nedomlel

That is some serious defensive depth and one or two of those guys could certainly be packaged up in a trade to bolster this team for the future. Schultz would be a seriously incredible addition.

I wouldn't put them in that order, but yeah that'd be incredible.

And while this may sound crazy, I'd actually be in favor of going after Schultz as the primary defensive acquisition this summer; then try and add a top six winger like Parise or Semin. From the little I've seen of him he looks like a definite top four d-man in the future, and he is younger and cheaper than adding a top UFA d-man. But then again our offensive depth is deeper in the farm than defense, so IDK...that's why KH is the GM.

One thing's for sure, there will be no shortage of suitors for Schultz's services.

I agree. I hope he becomes a Red Wing.

They may actually need him next season - if Lidstrom and Stuart both retire and they don't get Suter, they could theoretically bring in someone like Schultz and rotate him with Kindl and Smith in the 3rd pair. Plus, Quincey and White are both technically movable if the need arises. I don't think they'll do that but it's theoretically an option.
