It wasn't supposed to be good journalism, he was venting for a fanbase...
Horse crap. This is a clear example of a media outlet grasping to create controversy, due to their inability to ask inteligent and high gain questions to illicit a response. I guess it was the Leafs players that did not want to make the playoffs and win the cup and chose to lose the games they did. Accountability is important, but hack journalism with the sole intent to create controversey and ratings is a joke. Total emabarrassment to the Toronto media, and speaks to the inteligence level of those that find this to be engaging news coverage. I very much dislike Steve Simmons and appreciates his deficiencies as a journalist, and lack of understanding communication and inteligent dialogue, but this takes the cake. Sure makes Toronto a great place to play hockey.

Yes, of course, a 27-year-veteran of the highest rated local newscast in Toronto clearly ran the report for "controversy and ratings." Makes a lot of sense.

For sure, the thought process and engaging questions put forth in those interviews were thought provoking and news worthy. A complete and utter joke; nothing more. Hack jouranlism at its finest. Clearly shows how programs like Springer and others have strived, and some, appreciate non sensical controversy, and lack of inteligence and thought behind it.

Why play in this city?No one else would pay them, what they get paid for this garbage, thats why.If they dont like it,they can always quit hockey.Notice they never do?Other than Kessel and Lupul, not one Leaf earned his contract.People are paying extreme money to watch this fiasco, some even making hard personal scarifices in the middle of a recession to see them.Something has to change,Burkes coddle them like babies approach not only doesn't work,he said he would put a stop to the babying. We need to turn the heat way way up.Someone should be ashamed, someone should be apologizing to the fans for wasting their hard earned money.Fans work 8 hours or more a day. This team works how many hours a day?
After 45 years major damage is being done to the fanbase for years to come.Luckily Bell/Rogers can afford the hit,but the fans shouldnt have to.This is a disgrace to hockey and Toronto. The fans have had enough and just like in Vancouver,Burke's b.s approach is worn thin.Way to go,but it didnt go after the right people hard enough.Just remember if it really was that bad they could tear up those contracts they didnt earn and no one would care. The fans are the victims, who bleeds for them?No one!
They've been embarrassed by their own performance these past couple months and have been booed/mocked regularly on home ice of late too.
Why not tar and feather them off the rink as well?
I can't believe I've actually bothered to read through some of this thread, but it's as if some of your worlds have been turned upside down by this team's decline.
I think the heavy media pressure and stupid questions like these are part of the problem why its so hard for Toronto to attract top UFAs despite Burkes own rules.
Maybe your management should do what the Wings have done playing the no nonsense card with the media and let players shy away from it without forcing them? Not trying to troll you guys just a honest solution which could help your young team in the long run.
Winning would help things greatly, we attracted some nice UFAs pre-lockout
The heat should be on them... Why should it be acceptable that the highest grossing team in hockey, home to NHL headquarters and the hockey hall of fame doesn't make the playoffs for 7 years.
I hope they continue to grill the underperforming players until they are run out of town. If you win the Stanly Cup in Toronto you become a hockey legend... Streets would be named after you, would be the best place in the world to win the cup.

Unfortunately, your words (while true) will be buried beneath all of the leaf player apologists.
I'm disgusted by most of the responses in this thread. What this reporter did was ask the tough questions that require real answers, not pre-empted responses from media coached athletes who have been the worst team in the league for the last 30 games.
You want the players to be coddled? You want everyone to be sensitive to their feelings? Tough. This is a mans league and a damn good job for these guys.
I just had my performance review at work. Want to know the questions I was asked? The exact same ones these guys were. It's a part of life ... Do you think you are competent? Our results are x what are your opinions on why that is? What can you do to make the company better? How are you going to do things that directly serve our customer better?
If I answered with 'I'm not answering that' ... 'I don't know' or 'we are all in the same boat here' ... I would probably be fired on the spot.
Want coddling the sensitive athletes? Look at the past few years. Ever since Burke took over the players have been handled with kid gloves by the media and the fans.
Go to the game and boo them off the ice. Have reporters ask questions that demand accountability to the I dividual. Hold the GM accountable for the team and the players accountable for their play.
This season is a disaster and the team should expect the angry fans and media. There are no excuses. Some of us are fed up and we are going to take it out on management, the players, and anyone else who has a part in the epic and inexcusable collapse of this team.
We suck, we suck badly and there is no reason to think that's going to change anytime soon
At an honest 5-foot-11 and 185 pounds, Brad Ross is a middleweight who carries with him a profound hatred of defeat. “I hate losing,” Ross said from Portland. “I hate losing more than I love winning.”

5'11? I've been seeing 6'1 and 185 closer to 200.

Did you miss the part where the players in our dressing room seem to not care that they lose every game and this guy hates losing more than he likes winning?

The only truth is in the standings and they're piss poor. No excuses for this group. They are as bad as they look and their propensity for being blown out shows they lack the focus and self respect to fight through adversity.
I agree...every year their are some fans and even management that takes "slices of the season" to prove they are a good team. It really matters only after 82 games and those are 82 in the same hockey season...lol. It was the same thing last year....only the collapse happened at a different juncture. The worst part for me is how the team showed so little character, backbone.....pretty much a spineless team who folded up the tent at the most critical part of the season. They really only needed to play .500 hockey for the last 30 games of the season and they probably would have slid in. The team has some serious problems outside the obvious ones.

That's been said since he was drafted though. If this was news that he woke up one morning and decided 'I REALLY HATE LOSING', then I'd be impressed. He'll be a player one day but it's up to him to use his body effectively.

Right, because the current group of Leafs players have no desire to win and have no aspirations of winning a cup. Makes plenty of sense for an NHL player to play in Toronto, being under a constant microscope, and have the agenda of not really wanting to win. Funny how the posters who see value in the way the interviews were conducted, are the same ones who jump on and off the wagon with regularity.
Why are people calling out Schenn? Remember the giveaway in the Florida game? He came out for the intermission interview and took full responsibility, I can see how he was taken aback by the question and didn't know how to respond...
So HAPPY you brought that up...
During that game, the online stream from Leafs TV was a direct feed, there were no commercials so you could see what was happening as they were setting up to come back from commercial.
When Schenn stepped in to talk to Henny he was laughing and joking with him...then as soon as he knew the camera went on he made his serious 'I'm disappointed' face like he had during this piece. He is full of **** and didn't give a crap about that giveaway.
This was a great piece, he asked exactly the right questions, all the questions that the usual media folk won't ask because if they piss someone off their boss will get a phone call from their media relations guy. Obviously, CTV knew what he was going to do and didn't care. Well done.

Having aspirations, and acting on them are two different things. This kid, by all accounts, has an extra gear in terms of intensity, much the same way Tucker maintained throughout his career. That will be a welcome addition one day soon...

We did not attract the top UFA's often settled for what was left injury prone vets from Roberts, Nieuwendyk, Mogilny and yes even Belfour who had off ice issues to go along with health that other teams weren't willing to pay them what the Leafs did.
People could deny it all they want both Toronto and Montreal is not a destination players want to come to because of the media and how they treat the team.
I remember years ago in a preseason game vs Detroit Belfour's first game in a Leaf jersey was lit up and the booing started. They interviewed Chelios during the intermission and he made a comment about how he shouldn't have signed with the Leafs with the way they the media and fans a like treat the players but he had no choice because nobody else was willing to risk going after him. Speaks volumes of how the players view Leaf land and the ones that do sign here are never the top dogs cause they know anywhere they go they will get there money and the guys that do sign here from Roberts, Nieuwendyk, Belfour, Blake and Connoly come here because they wont get the money anywhere else.
People could say that winning would solve this is a bunch of Baloney. The entire Quinn era was met with criticism even with the team as an 100 point team. Sundin was constantly blasted as he wasn't a leader, constantly hearing that MLSE doesn't want to win in that they wont spend the money to land the big fish etc...
Just take a good hard look at this year the team was winning sitting in god damn first place in the East just before Reimer came back from his injury and everything that was talked about was blasting the Leafs. It just doesn't stop and getting worst and worst each and every year.
It really is about time Toronto is allowed to have a media ban during and after game days to not allow them near the players.
No it isn't. Why do these athletes have to be treated with all the reverence and exaggerated respect when they've been a complete disgrace to the city and organization? They take the money and run and pay lip service to playing poorly but do nothing but run down the clock on the season. Good on Lance Brown for letting them know it isn't funny.
are you serious? I like to think I'm critical of my own team, when watching the games and during the season. But that's absolutely ridiculous. An outrage and a disgrace would be the GM purposefully damaging our team, or keeping the team's salary cap near the floor, despite massive profits.
Also, how is this funny to them? Yeah, I'm sure the Leafs enjoy playing like crap and just can't get enough of the negativity.
The players can play as hard as they can, and if it's not good enough, it's up to the coaches to make the appropriate changes to stratey or coaching style, and its the GM's job to bring in the personnel, and make trades to better the team. Either follow your team through thick and thin, or go cheer for another one. No one wants people like you as "fans". If you can even call yourself that.
Hogwash that we need to treat these guys with kid gloves so UFAs will come here. These guys get treated like kings 99.9% of the time they're here. Heaven forbid they are held accountable for their lousy play.
There's a difference between holding them accountable and a journalist being a complete d**k.
And seriously?? Why the hell are the whiners still complaining? If they played better and won meaningless games, we'd have a worse draft pick, which I'm sure you guys would all complain about. Right now we need to get the highest pick we can. We can criticize our off-season when it arrives, as that's where the biggest impact will come from right now.
