I am excited yet very worried that EA is going to ruin this like they have done to so many other franchises/brands in the last several years. I have a feeling that it may turn out to be similar to so many of their other games with DLC after DLC and milk it for every last dollar they can until they ruin the brand. At this point I have 0 faith in EA, and until they prove me wrong I am scared for SimCity. At this point I will take Ubisofts draconian DRM over EAs greed.
An unforced smile crossed my face when I saw the Maxis logo. It's nice to still see a studio around that was around in the 80s. It's likely not exactly the same studio, but seeing the same name making the same games is nice. I wish that there were still a Microprose logo when I load up a Civilization game.
I really like that we'll finally see a realistic number of vehicles and pedestrians. That's always been one of the few disappointments of the series. Now, maybe, it'll actually seem like the city has thousands or tens of thousands of people.

It's mentioned at the beginning of the video that they're not the final graphics and that they're showing off functionality there, not graphics. Also, imagine how everything will look when there are hundreds of buildings of all types, plus even more vehicles and pedestrians, on the screen at the same time. Most previews of these types of games would show only fully-developed cities, not how less impressive things look when you're just starting the city. I like that Maxis is being more honest than that and not afraid to show what the early stages of the game may look like.

DLC isn't what we need to worry about, IMO; it's the DRM. EA is the worst of all publishers when it comes to DRM, IMO. They ruined Spore (another Maxis game) with invasive DRM and made DRM a big headache for so many other games. You have to be able to actually play the game before DLC is at all a concern. I, too, have zero faith in EA, but it's over DRM. DLC doesn't ruin games like DRM can, IMO.

Like I said, Ill take Ubisofts DRM over EAs greed anytime. Nickel and dimeing gamers for every little piece of content has gotten so far over the top for EA it is silly - just look at The Sims franchise or the new Mass Effect 3 with the new price point for a complete game 79$??? IMO they have destroyed the once good Bioware name, Maxis has not had a release in 10?years...I am too lazy to look but how many other brands have they gobbled up (or even in house developed - Madden) and milked for every dollar until the brand has is thought of as garbage.
Really, for me DRM is not an issue in most any form for myself. While Origin is a slight annoyance it really is no different then Steam, all the time internet connection like many Ubisoft games also is no big deal, Securom I really dont even know what that is (I just hit install and carry on with my life); activation limits is probably the only DRM that I get upset about.
Maybe it's because I just don't play many Ubisoft games. They tend to publish games that I don't care about. EA, on the other hand, publishes games that I care about, so I end up being subjected to EA a lot more.
Just take the example of The Sims. The Sims 1 released all the DLC content, clothes, pets whatever else later, that was ok because it was the first game and perhaps they didnt know where they were going, Sims 2 was essentially the same game but this time they knew the direction they were going but waited to release all the same DLC as the first one and exactly the same for the third one. I am sure it is all planned to release base game then have all the exact DLC to come later where they know what the DLC is. DLC and expansions should be new content that was not thought of while the game was being made and developed after it is seen what direction the game is going.
As far as ME3, I have not played it, but considering the files are all in the game for the day 1 DLC it is hard to believe EA/biowares claim that it was not ripped from the game to sell as extras for more cash.
We can also look at CD Projeckt RED and see what they are doing with The Witcher2, no DRM as well as free DLC, pretty good for such a small publisher.
Personally, I have not liked DLC from the first time I saw it but it seems here to stay. At least in the olden days when we got expansions it would add a heck of a lot more to the game for that 30$ then new outfits or a couple of new guns or 1 extra mission. EA is not the only company that does it they are just the worst, nearly every company does but because people accept it now these companies can hold back more and more content from games that they know they will add in dribs and drabs for a few dollars each.
Anyhow, the DLC debate probably could use its own thread rather then clutter up this SimCity 5 thread.

I had the same thought. Since my post was probably too tempting for people to respond to and I didn't want more DLC discussion cluttering up this thread, as you said, I deleted most of it and gave a link to the thread that I just created, instead. EDIT: BTW, I didn't create the thread or make it a poll to prove anything. The stronger support so far for DLC is a surprise to me. I honestly thought when I made it that it'd be weighted more toward your perspective.
Actually I feel this is a step forward. Everyone is always connected to the internet in this day in age (unless you still have dial up??)
This adds a whole new level to the game. I am very excited.
You're right in that I have internet 99% of the time, and that not having it for that 1% wouldn't be a big deal.
But if I'm on an airplane, or my internet is out, or I'm in the middle of nowhere and don't have an internet connection, it's laughable that I shouldn't be able to play a single player game because Maxis thinks I might have pirated it. Nope. Unacceptable on the basis of principle.
Oh man, something about the way stuff goes "thund!" when you put it down just tickles my nether regions in a way I can't quite describe. It's weird how tiny little crap like that is what you notice.
I find the DRM terror strange, since I've been using Steam since 2004.
Origin is not THAT bad... It's not as good as Steam for obvious reasons, but its usable.
SimCity is probably going to be a good enough game that it's worth putting up with. Also there is no way it'll be as popular as Diablo 3 so server issues wont be a problem. It's sad when I can say Battle.net is worse than Origin when it comes to DRM. C'mon Blizz.
Ya, I have changed my tune about Origin. After caving and buying ME3 on Origin it is not that bad, still not even close to as good as Steam though, I just dont like the trend of more and more clients for games, but it seems the way of the future so no big deal for me.
As far as constant internet connection at all times, again it doesnt really bother me except those times when I am traveling and have my laptop and not connection. But I have lots of games to fill that time instead.
