Burke has basically staked his tenure in Toronto on the Kessel deal.
Similar things were said when they traded for Phanuef, and he tarnished it further by being so hesitant in firing Wilson.
I'm not saying Kessel will definitely be on the move but what will it hurt for Sather to inquire?
I still think Columbus will ask too much for Nash. Whatever package Sather makes to Columbus, I'd turn to Toronto and sweeten the pot by offering 3 years worth of 1st round picks.

I'm pretty sure we won't be paying more for less. Do you really think Sather would offer Dubinsky, Erixon (obviously wouldn't be in a deal for Iginla so let's say Mcilrath), Miller, Thomas and a 1st for Iginla? When he could just walk in a year? I doubt it.

As far as I'm concerned, Nash has NEGATIVE value. As in, he's getting paid more than he'll ever be worth. Granted, when you acquire elite talent, it's most likely going to be at an overvalued price, that's how free agency works. Thing is, I have questions if Nash is that elite talent I would be willing to gut our team for. Especially when you consider that you have to give assets to even have the right to overpay Nash yearly. If there was no NHL cap, I'd be all for Nash but there is a cap and I'm not willing to risk losing our younger guys because we don't have cap room. There are plenty of guys on bad teams who would come for way cheaper than Nash and on appropriate contracts. Not to mention free agents who we don't need to trade assets to acquire.
He has an awesome shot, and I have seen him drop to block shots too. He is UFA and would probably consider a shorter term contract to get a shot with a team as strong as NYR
he is 6'2" and 2 seasons removed from a 40 goal season he is also listed as LW

He's not my first choice, but he's definitely a consideration, IMO.
His "laziness" is completely overblown. He's not Ryan Callahan or Carl Hagelin away from the puck, but with the puck, and in the offensive zone, he absolutely works for his goals and assists. He's constantly making second and third efforts to keep a play alive or get the puck through. I think he'd benefit greatly from a change of scenery. WSH is a mess and it's still all about Ovechkin over there.
Here's my priority order for offseason acquisitions:
Parise
Suter
Semin
Nash
Now, Parise and Suter, I'd be thrilled to give a retirement contract to. Semin, I'd be very interested in 3-5 years at no more than 6 mil per season. If he wants to chase the biggest payday, that's fine, but it won't be with us. If he wants to be a Ranger, I'll be happy to pay him a fair six million.
I really don't think Nash is the answer. 7.8 million is more than I'd want to pay for Parise, who is a much better player. And we'd have to give up assets too. Unless its a complete Gomez of a deal, I'd much rather sign Semin.
Please tell me the Ranges are not going after Parise in the offseason and he will stay with the Devils? If the Rags get him that team will deadly with Gaborik-Parise-Richards-Callahan-Dubinsky-Stepan-Kreider etc. I don't wanna face them for the next 5 years.
Pierre LeBrun (2:36 PM)
yes my sources indicate the Rangers are among a long list of teams that plan to make him an offer July 1.... no way of knowing yet if Parise will stay in NJ or not. Traded emails with Parise's agent yesterday and all he said was that contract talks had NOT begun at this point with NJ... obviously it's going to wait until after the season

There's a difference between saying he wouldn't cost what was offered for Nash and saying he wouldn't cost too much.
One year left on his contract can bring a lot of teams into the market.
