He was the Leafs' leading scorer in the 1963–64, 1966–67 and 1969–70 seasons, and the team's top goal scorer in 1970–71 and 1972–73. Keon was considered one of the fastest skaters in the NHL, and one of the best defensive forwards of his era. He would usually play against the opposing team's top centre, and developed a reputation for neutralizing some of the league's top scorers. In 1970–71, he scored eight shorthanded goals, setting an NHL record.
I remember at the beginning of the season when the team was doing well (especially the 4 wins in a row) Phaneuf was playing great, but the last 2 months he has been the opposite. I really hope next season will be better.
Komi owned up to it and he's a vet of the league. Why can't Phaneuf? Phaneuf screams to me that he has a massive sense of entitlement. Realistically he's a good #2D, and he shouldn't be playing 26mins a night.
He has always seemed to have a huge chip on his shoulder and I think it's only getting worse being cappo. I really like that Komi owned up. Phaneuf has put up good point totals, but he also plays on the same line as Lupul and a top 10 point getter, his defensive awareness has been god awful most nights
Phanuef is no captain. Rather see Grabo be captain over him. The only people that think he should be captain are the people on this board and Burkes lap dogs. Post this on the main board and see what other fans say.. An unbiased person will not agree with you guys
The same unbiased fans on the main boards that say all is well in the NHL as long as the Leafs aren't a competitive hockey club? As long as the subject of the thread is something negative about the Leafs then yea they will agree with you.
Dumbest article that's come out yet. When Sundin was 26 he led the team to a 69 pt finish. 69 POINTS. People would be furious if sucked that much.
Phaneuf isn't the type of player to carry the team on his back, but he's the right identity for this team. He just needs better players around him. We have 2 first liners and 1 first pairing NHL players (Kessel, Lupul, Phaneuf) and you aren't getting very far if that's all you have in the talent department.
How is Phaneuf alone going to change the fortune of the team now?
Is he suppose to strap the pads on and make saves?
Is he suppose to score all the goals?
Articles like this are such BS cause they make it out to seem the captain should have some magic power where at the drop of a hat he can change the mentality of a team or make some the people around him more talented.
Is Dion a perfect player? No.
Is Dion an ideal captain? Maybe not.
But he's had absolutely no help in the matter of leadership with this team.
Cause A - The two assistants Armstrong and Komisarek have been so poor this year they have been healthy scratches most nights.
And B - No veteran or mentor was brought in to help him along(Like Roberts was for Mats). When Tim Connolly is your most seasoned player there's probably going to be an issue with leadership.
Those issues lay at the feet of one man, The Manger.
So people(media and some fans) need to stop blaming the lack of talent of about 10-12 of the other players on Dion's leadership.
A thousand times this. We all know we don't have that stabilizing veteran presence, but, I think more importantly, we also don't have secondary leadership AT ALL, veteran or otherwise. We have guys who play with a lot of heart, like Grabovski and Brown, and we have guys who can lead by example, like Kessel, but We don't have those secondary leaders that every team must have.
(This is not to say Dion shouldn't shoulder some of the blame, but the team really needs some more character guys. Not necessarily veterans, but definitely better alternate captains than Komisarek and Armstrong)
I remember when Wilson called him the best d-man in the NHL early in the season, it has been all down hill from there as far as his overall game is concerned.
Yeah, I remember that. Dion was playing on a whole another level before that. Its not that he was bad after Wilson said that but his game did drop off.
As for Dion's leadership, I'm not sure I would blame him. I don't like him as a captain at all and never thought he should have been one but even as a captain, one player can only do so much. There needs to be other leaders in the room helping him out and not just in the dressing room but leading by example and Leafs just haven't had anyone do that. Not enough talent and terrible goaltending is the reason more than anything for the Leafs collapse.
