The Business of HockeyDiscuss the financial and business aspects of the NHL. Franchise sales, valuations, TV contracts, ratings, expansion, relocation, the CBA and work stoppage discussion goes here.
I realize a couple would (jets come to mind) but most teams have colour as their identity. In my opinion teams should get to choose their primary and wear it all the time )unless it is the same as the other team
Yes. Even before Winnipeg, Bettman had started using a line of "Ideally we'd like to return to places we wish we never left". Even then, my first instinct was that he wasn't talking only about Winnipeg.
My feeling is that Quebec City has been the NHL's Plan B for Phoenix ever since the Thrashers moved to Winnipeg. However, since that plan had encountered its share of obstacles before last week's announcement, so the NHL was forced to create a Plan C just in case. Enter Seattle.
I remember Darren Ford saying in the ROTJ when CoG coughed up the $25 that the real losers of the Thrashers moving to Winnipeg were the fans in QC.

Honestly, I dont think the NHL had any intention of moving into Seattle so prematurely. Great potential. Not ready. Hoisted up the flagpole only to serve notice to PKP that the league had other options. Bull&%/# because right NOW they really dont.
Hansen & Seattles first priority is the NBA. Neither Key Arena nor the Tacoma Dome can hold a candle to the Colisee, nor can I see anyone but PKP paying the tag on the Coyotes.
Furthermore, and Im speculating, but I think the NHL played the Seattle card when PKP called them out on the price, as in "I will pay you 200M all in" or whatever. The league, Bettman, wanting more.
I find it implausible to believe that negotiations have not been ongoing for sometime and an agreement in principal isnt in place.

Maybe, but imho, the league's reasoning is more along these lines....
They're thinking about expansion. They think Seattle is one of the leading contenders and an ideal American market to put a team.... but they're just not ready yet. So, enter talk about interested buyers that they fully intend to do business with in the future to raise the possibility of an NHL team coming there in the public consciousness in that region and give a badly needed boot to the arena development process that was sorely needed in Seattle. The NHL is then able to gauge interest from the market to see if the public really is interested and if the municipal and state governments are open to throwing in a dime to help fund the arena, and effectively begin to set the groundwork for having a team there eventually.
But that's the long-term thought process, short-term.... maybe the league was a bit underwhelmed with the overall price tag that TNSE paid ASG for the Thrashers. Sure, the league was probably very happy with their relocation cut, but as they'll be getting every nickle, dime, and penny out of a sale for the Yotes and their subsequent relocation, they'd probably be interested in driving up the purchasing price of the team if at all possible. By making it a situation where there might be two interested buyers, the NHL would be able to think about requesting an even bigger amount of cash from the Quebecor folks then they would've otherwise if they were the only interested buyers, especially as it definitely wouldn't hurt to have even more cash on hand just in case the Glendale folks ever get litigious over losing the Yotes.
Just my opinion, obviously. Feel free to give me a tin foil hat.

Could be, but the NHL, under Gary, has not shown to use such advanced reasoning.
Per Rejean Tremblay on Paul Houde's show just now on 98,5FM, Alain Crête has signed with TVA Sports to call Nordiques games. He called Nord games back in the day.
HNIC Hotstove are talking like Quebec City getting a team is a done deal.
They said it's widely believed around the league that Patrick Roy is waiting to be named GM of the new Quebec City team.
Of course they are. Like I said many, many times in the last few weeks, because Seattle's arena isn't certain from a lack of BBall and the Coyotes are finished (Dregger talked about the NHL considering a ''plan B'' after the very next week 2 weeks ago!) it's 99.99% certain that the Coyotes will become the Québec Nordiques next fall.
I dont see another possible outcome! The way Daly and some owners have been speaking, this year was a last chance for the Coyotes. Unlike what some posters have said, I dont even see the NHL accepting YET ANOTHER 25 million dollars bribe from Glendale. They just want out if no owners are found.
No, the Nordiques WILL be there next season. It's clear as crystal.

I would've liked your comment but since i can't, i'm gonna comment on it
Let's just say that I agree with all you're saying. It is an optimistic outcome, but there are just to many signs.
So unless a miracle occurs (they find someone who can fix Phoenix situation long-term), they won't be able to save the franchise and no other market can get them on a quick turnaround with 3-5 years of season tickets commitment like Quebec can do it.
Not sure if it's a done deal yet, we'll stay cool on that but I already predicted an announcement on April 14th on site www.jaimadate.com lol

Roy has been repeating over and over in the last few weeks that he doesn't want anything to do with the GM job. He likes to be involved in the game and with players, not doing office work.
