Biggest Bust in recent history

Hello all,

I've been following the boards for a while now but only just joined, so I thought I'd kick it off with a random topic (apologies if it's been done before).

The Rangers have a long, rich history of throwing money at players past their best and curious draft day decisions, so I was just wondering what you think was the biggest head scratcher/face palm moment in recent history? My vote goes for Hugh Jessiman. A quick look at the names below him in that draft year are enough to make a grown man cry.

LGR!

Do you really have to ask?

The names Hugh Jessiman, Al Montoya (he busted hard for the Rangers, and while he has played well for the Isles, if they were a real NHL team he'd be seeing zero minutes) and Bobby Sangs make all Rangers fans shudder.

Take your pick.

Welcome to the boards, but, either way, unnecessary thread is unnecessary.

Jessiman by far.

You look at that year's first round and you want to cry. Jessiman and Farladeau represent the low ponint for the Rangers.

Montoya is inconsistent, but I think he couldve been somewhat more useful for this team. Jessiman never even got on the radar.

I guess Montoya could have been a backup for us, but he would never get the opportunity to live up to his draft position here. BTW, I remember being just amazed that we got Farladeau. I didn't know anything about him, but when you read his bio, it screamed out REACH in the second round. Sounded like he'd be a 4th liner at best. I was told that I wasn't giving him a chance. Looks like despite my zero knowledge, other than his bio I was right. BTW, what about Lafleur, or whatever that goalie's name is who we took in the second round in the Cherepanov draft?

are we talking about draft picks only? because the worst signing has to be redden.

as far as picks, jessiman was bad. i actually played hockey with him as a kid and i can't even brag about it!

Speaking about pure "bust" level I'm inclined to agree. Jessiman is bad because of who we missed out on. Brendl was a bust of epic proportions all on his own.

EDIT: I just went to Google Brendl's stats. "Pavel Brendl bust" was the second suggested search.

Brendl & Lundmark. Had such high hopes for them.

Christian Dube was another one...he seemed like he had all the tools to dominate...WTF happened?

Exactly, Jessiman didn't have the hype that Brendle did , its was who we passed on that made Jessiman such a dissapointment

yea, I too thought Lundmark would be a solid player for this organization

I think you gotta go with Brendle. Higher pick with even more expectations.

Jessiman and Sangs definitely follow him up. I still feel like Lundmark was rushed and didnt get the proper development to at least stick in the nhl.

And though not so much a bust but I thought they would produce more because of where they played college hockey and their success there, the Ferraro brothers.

I personally consider Drury a worse signing. More money, and he still is eating up cap. Redden at least is off the cap and playing an important role in Connecticut.

True, but I at least have a small modicum of respect for Drury. He had a big impact on the player that Callahan has become for sure. That'll be his ever lasting impact on the Rangers franchise, and makes the $7 million + cap hit worth it alone.

Callahan gave a lot of credit to Drury for making him the player he is today.

The worst part about Redden (if I remember correctly) was we could have signed Chara instead

Drury most certainly helped there but Callahan was always a natural born leader.

I have respect for both players, plenty. Redden hasn't complained about being demoted since it happened, he has just gone along his business and been a great leader for that team. I remember reading an article about McDonagh praising what Redden has done to help him learn.

Can we please close this thread? I'm so tired of hearing about Jessiman or Brendl etc. already.

Different regimes drafted then.

Yes the Rangers made some bad draft and FA decisions but so do many teams. Is Ottawa not kicking themselves everyday for picking Brian Lee over Marc Staal or Anze Kopitar?

Taylor Hall needs to show he can stay healthy or else Boston won the Taylor vs. Tyler debate.

Let's think about the present and not dwell on the past.

Awards:
Brendl was a bust, but that was a horrible draft class in 1999. Who did we miss out on? Tim Connolly or Taylor Pyatt? Our top pick sucked, but the same can be said for most of the other guys taken in round one. Look who was taken immediately after Brendl:

Tim Connolly
Brian Finley
Kris Beech
Taylor Pyatt
Jamie Lundmark
Branislav Mezei
Olli Saprykin
Denis Shvidki
Jani Rita
Jeff Jillson
Scott Kelman
David Tanabe

And on and on. It was an awful draft year. Meanwhile, the first round in 2003 was LOADED with future stars. Jessiman was the worst pick by a mile.

With any of our prospects like Jamie Lundmark, Manny Malholtra, and Pavel Brendl I feel it's hard to focus all of the blame on the players. As an organization it seems like the Rangers were all over the map, with how they wanted to develop their prospects. However, with Jessiman there was at least a plan with what to do with the prospects, and he just never seemed to put himself in the discussion.

Considering all the picks we had in 2004 that draft was awful, though we did get dubi and cally out of it

On one hand, I agree with this sentiment. This can depress the hell out of a Rangers' fan sifting through this thread.

On the other hand, threads like these keep us humble...whether we need that painful syringe or not.

I agree it keeps us humble, I haven't seen this team in first place since I was 9, I'm 27 now. I was there every Rangers Devils game in the swamp as a kid watching them crushed and being made fun of. I still remember Johan ****ing Whitehall(spelling?) scoring one game. I lived through the so called dark age, maybe that's why I come off as a negative Nancy, and maybe that's why I'm so skeptical of our chances in the playoffs.

But to get back on topic, obvious draft busts are Stool Specimen, Montoya, Brendl, Lundmark, Maholtra. Free agent busts Kamensky, Gomez, Drury, Redden, Kotalik, Holik, I was watching a game I taped from like 2004 damn I forgot Lindros and Jagr played on a line here for a short time. Imagine if they both were going at the same time, and a healthy Bure? Mind/universe blown
