Not an April Fools Joke: DP Buying 5,000 fans "lunch" tomorrow

http://islanders.nhl.com/club/news.h...id=DL|NYI|home

The first 5,000 fans at Sunday’s game will receive a hot dog and a small fountain drink or water courtesy of DP.

“It's not that cheap to get a hot dog and a drink at a game anymore,” DiPietro said. “I thought I’d try to make the game a little more enjoyable. That's what I'm trying to do.”

DiPietro will be on hand to distribute vouchers and interact with fans as a part of Fan Appreciation Day. Vouchers are one per person and can only be redeemed at Sunday’s game.

Ricky isn't paying for this. He's just the 4.5M Hospitality Manager.

Clearly trying to win some fans back after all these seasons....it won't work on this fan who won't be attending

Sadly this actually beats the hell out of him playing in a game at this point in his career. Still 5000*$7 (Im guessing since I dont eat hot dogs or drink soda) = $35,000. Very nice of Dipi.

Very cool of rick to do. No question the guy wants to be an islander and its unfortunate what happened to him. However, he needs to retire and become part of the organization in a different way.

If you were going to the game tomorrow, what would you say to DP?

Cool move by Rick but I have to ask-- will his next injury be carpal tunnel syndrome from handing out 5,000 vouchers?

In a time when nobody really wanted to sign with the Isles. DP was willing to stay here for the rest of his career, not just sign here but actually live here. Injuries have destroyed him as a player and I have no problem with people wishing the guy would retire or saying how bad he has been in his limited games played over the last few years but to attack his character or dedication to the team because of injuries is ridiculous.

About DP and the Islanders

I posted this in the main board after seing the overwhelming amount of jokes towards our team and DP.

I am frustrated as any of us with the whole DP injury fiasco, but enough is enough I had to take a stand on the main board and defend our own.

My post........

"The guy bleeds orange and Blue......No players that are any good want to come here....DP commited to LI when he was entering his prime....NOBODY askes to be injured and gets hurt on purpose....If Hossa,Luongo,Kovi,Bryz, or Ovi were to get hurt, would you all expect them to stop trying to return? They all have LONG contracts as well...It was bad luck and its not the only contract of its kind....Would I offer that to a player? NO but when a player is offerd a contract like that they are not going to turn it down. Its security for them and thier family.

I wish DP were able to realize that he can no longer take the physical demands of a pro Athlete. I wish he retired tommorow. The Isles are an easy target, say what you want about MAD MIKE and some off the outrageous trades we have made, our ownership problems, our mishandling of prospects, and our management and uncertain future, but the DP jokes are getting old and quite frankly, should not even be an issue that is made fun of.

I agree that its pretty weird thing for DP to buy the Isles fans lunch, but its more than I see other players doing for their fans and atleast somone realizes that we as Isles fans have Been Painfully Loyal year after year off dissapointment and heartach. He might not be the most beloved guy theses days around the colliseum, but atleast we know he is an Islander through and through whether on the ice or not, and is willing to do the rite thing by the fans.

I know their will be some that say if he truly cares about the organization and the fans that he will retire, but how many off you would give up on the thing you love the most and have done your whole life.

Kudos and much respect for Rickeys Friendly gesture.

No matter what outsiders say, we Islanders fans have a special bond to eachother and our team that will never be understood by any outsider. We love our Hockey team as much as anyother fans loves thiers, and we will continue to bleed orange and Blue until the end.

LETS GO ISLANDERS"

I couldn't agree with you more. I hate the way some Islander fans continue to criticize DP.

Lets pat him on the back for signing a guaranteed 15 year deal worth 85 million dollars.

He isn't Ocho Cinco walking into a TGI Fridays and paying for every ones dinner. He is giving coupons for a hot dog and soda to the first 5,000.

Thanks Rick.. Now please go away!!!

I fully expect his knees and hip to shatter into a thousand pieces, spontaneously combust, then implode into a fine dust while handing someone a hot dog ticket.

i feel bad for him...i hope he finds success ultimately in our organization or somewhere in hockey--no one tries to get hurt--very unfortunate

a normal owner would just do the promotion himself

IMO, this is a prelude to DP joining the organization in another rank--this is not a move a player makes (although classy)

If its a charity item, he's paying full fare. If its not, sure Charlie lets him pay cost so maybe 2500-5000.

Nice gesture but it's selfish. The guys been on IR most of the season and doesnt want the fans to forget about him. He gets to "interact" with fans so he can personally tell them he's recovering and be back next year.

There is zero benefit to this as an organization - its Wang letting DP do this which is freaking sad.

Is JT buying dogs or trying to win the friggin game? Why couldn't the Isles just give away the vouchers and not have DP attached to it?

Wang is trainwreck to think this is a good idea for the fans.
