Team rank in Rangers history

Hello everyone. I'm new to this board and have been following the rangers since post-lockout. I was just wondering if you think this team will surpass the point mark of the 93-94 ranger team and where you rank this 2011-2012 team right now out of all the ranger teams in their history and if they win the cup where would you rank them?

If they win the Cup, first.

If they don't, I don't care.

No, winning a Cup is what everyone plays for. If you don't win it, you're in company with the other 28 losers in the league. That doesn't mean we can't compare this season with other seasons, though.

I'm satisfied with giving it our all and having a decent run as a middle of the pack team. But we're the best right now. There's no turning back now.

The 93-94 team was one of the best of all time. Vastly superior to this one.

I would say this team regular season wise will be considered a top 20 to top 25 team, with room to move up depending how many more wins we wind up by seasons end.

My impression is the opposite. The '94 team was more balanced than '12. Back then, it was a veteran team that had the offensive firepower and PP to go with the sterling defense, effective PK,.... and a goalie (Richter) who was having what turned out to be a career season.

But this year's edition is younger, has more room for improvement (esp. the forwards) in the coming years, and best of all,.... a goalie who has at least several more years of Vezina-caliber play left in him.

Now if only the upcoming CBA's salary cap agreement allow our management the ability to hold our core together,...... keep your fingers crossed.

If we win, will the cup mean more to anyone else because this team is mostly home grown? That team was what Oilers east?

91-92 team was the best I've ever seen. I say they had more talent than the 93-94 team.

Didn't they finish 10 points or so behind the 93-94 team? I won't mention the loss to the Pens since the Pens were probably better than any team the Rangers faced in the 94 playoffs.

I just checked, it's 7 points and the 93-94 Rangers played 4 more games. BTW, everyone is quick to dismiss the 4 shootout wins and the 2 OT losses we had this year, but that team did play 2 more more games than we will.

In the NHL, there's 2 prizes you can win.

1. The Stanley Cup
2. A top5 draft pick

All other 25 teams lost.

Cup = Company with 28, 33, 40, 94 teams...obviously.

No Cup = Company with 29, 32, 37, 50, 72, 79, 86, 92, 97 teams that were good enough and were close, but didn't get enough breaks their way.

Speaking strictly from a regular season standpoint:

From a goaltending and defensive standpoint, probably the 2nd best of all time behind the 1971 team.

From an offensive standpoint, really nothing special.

From a clutch standpoint, certainly one of the best. Eight OT wins (no shootouts) must be close to a modern-day team record.

The 91-92 Rangers were excellent. Five 30-goal scorers.

I agree that they had more talent than the 93-94 team.

The Game 4 loss against the Penguins in 1992 is my most painful moment as a Rangers fan.

They had the eventual Cup winners on the ropes with the chance to go back to MSG up 3-1 in the series.

Not to be.

Might be my reading comprehension, but I don't think it's one of the best teams in NHL history. Probably one of the best in Rangers history though.

Cup win or no cup win this teams talent is no way near 1993-1994 or the early 1970's. That is not a knock on this team. Its because the salary cap era has made it very hard to stock pile loads of experienced high priced players. In the 1970's you could have a team with 120 points and a team with 40 points. Those kind of point spreads dont happen in the salary cap era. Now even the horrible teams are around 65-70 points.

Nowadays a team doesnt have to be great to win a cup. You will rarely see a team win 2 in a row never mind 4-5 in a row. This team has great talent for todays NHL but it is not same level of talent as the 2 teams I mentioned. I dont think a team like the 1970's Habs with 8 hall of famers is possible in the salary cap era.

I'm just talking strictly talent wise. They had 5 30-goal scorers and two defenseman that combined for 170 points (Leetch and Patrick). Tim Kerr was a bottom-6 forward on that team...

The 72 and 92 teams were the only ones out of the last 5 that were good enough to win a cup except for the following problems:
Orr in 72 and Mario in 92
