I could see Toronto doing this. They've traded away 1st rounders before (they didn't know what they were, but still), and Burke definitely one his last trade with Calgary by trading for one of their top players.
No team is going to give up a top 5 pick for 34/35 year old Iginla or Kipper. What would be the point? If you are drafting in the top 5, you are not an Iginla or Kipper away from a Stanley Cup.
You can argue the Islanders, but even there if Snow could be convinced, fat chance Iggy would waive his NTC to go there.
If Calgary wants a top 5 pick, then can get one by rebuilding properly the same way everyone else does.
They have those assets, that they can use to get some young talent. Do they need to rebuild yes but those are assets that can help them. Can those assets be traded for a top 5 pick? We don't know, the GM's may think they can, while many here say no.
As crazy as it might sound, I'd do this as an Oil fan:
To CGY: Hemsky, 1st 2012 (currently 2nd overall)
To EDM: Iggy, 1st 2012 (currently 11th overall)
Grigorenko and Hemsky for Iginla and Faksa or Ceci?
Given Hemsky's contract, I'd rather keep the 2nd overall. Although it would be fun to see Iginla wearing the copper and blue. That alone might be worth it.

I doubt anything actually happens, though.
I don't think that the leafs would that. They are rebuilding through the draft.
Its more of getting at least a first for each of Kipper and Iggy and using those 2 and another piece to get a top 5 pick.
Ah ok then. That could work, depending on the positions of the picks. It would require multiple major deals in a short amount of time, but it's possible. What are the thoughts from Flame fans on whether Feaster is up to the task? It would require some smooth talking to get a lottery team's GM to pass on one of Yakupov/Grigorenko/Murray/Dumba/Forsberg/Galchenyk for a couple of mid round 1st picks.

The one thing Feaster can do is talk well and eat . I have liked what he has done so far so I would take my chances with him.
I wouldn't even trade just Iginla for that. Plus PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE keep Grabner
THE FLAMES OWNERSHIP WILL NOT ALLOW A REBUILD. Seriously get it through your damn head, its not hard to figure out and is stated a dozen times in every single Flames thread. Feaster has no choice, the ownership mandate is to try and win.
Don''t confuse fans wishlists with Grath Snow's comments and actions.Snow would not trade a high lottery pick or top prospects for 1 yr of ANYBODY,including Ignila.
Ok but the teams with the top 5 picks are still looking for something similar to what they could get with their pick, namely a top young prospect who's rights they will have for years.
?
Exactly.
Teams with top 5 picks are coming off seasons, where they have not sniffed the playoffs. So,they are not 1 player away from winning a cup.
They will want a young, high end player or prospect back. Not a 34/35 yr old, with 1 yr on his deal.
