Terrible analogy. A basketball team can pretty much get a shot off every single possession. If Kobe isn't taking a shot, Bynum and Gasol can. This is not the case in hockey. A hockey player who can get shots on goal--and score 20% for god's sake--is very valuable.

Forget scoring 50 and missing the playoffs, the real question should be how often the league leader in goals misses the playoffs

Poor Stamkos...
You mean, "Pull a Stamkos"...?

It doesn't happen all that often, but it has happened a few times. I like Stamkos but watching him play a lot the last 2 seasons, he's really a just a "pass the puck to him when he's in a good shooting lane" type of guy, I really want to see how good he is when St.Louis retires or misses significant time (not that I wish harm to Marty, big fan of the guy...just curious to see Stamkos without any decent playmakers).

Selanne in 97-98 had 52 goals in 73 games. Noone else on the team had even 20 goals and the had only 3 10+ goals scorers. They finished 2nd to last in the conference by 1 point difference.

Someone says this in every Stamkos thread.

Before Lecavalier got hurt, he didn't play with St.louis. He still scored as usual. Purcell is a great playmaker.

Big difference between 30 and 50. 30 happens all the time. Leafs had 2 last year and another with 29 and I think Isles had a few with 30. Both missed.

Don't think you can go off how many 50+ goal scorer's, but how many Rocket Richard winners have missed the playoffs instead.

And by saying "watched him a lot the past two seasons", you mean not at all right? Clearly, considering you are saying you want to see how he does without St Louis. He didn't play with St Louis for the entire season until Lecavalier got hurt a few weeks ago.

The guy does it all and scores any way you can possibly score. About the only offensive thing he needs serious work on is faceoffs.
