Don't think this needs its own thread:

http://insider.espn.go.com/nhl/featu...tures%2frumors

Two teams eyeing Redden
He may finally escape the minors.

Anyone have insider?

I don't send Redden anywhere until the playoffs are over for obvious reasons. Don't have insider, so I don't know what it says, but there's no way I do this if I'm Sather.

Well, anywhere he goes, he wouldn't be eligible to play in the playoffs. Regardless, I think it would have to be an offseason move. But who could possibly want him? His salary drops to 5 mil for each of the next 2 seasons, but I don't see that as being enough incentive for a cap floor team to take him, especially given the uncertainty of the CBA. The cap floor could end up being lower next year.

They might be talking about a buyout amnesty under a new CBA, too. Gomez is going to be next to get buried if these types of situations aren't resolved somehow. It's not fair to the player(s) and you can't blame the team(s) for doing it. You should be allowed to buyout one bad contract a year and I know this is unfair to small market teams in a way. Although, bought out players would be available for next to nothing for the small market teams - maybe make them available through waivers after buyouts.

I wouldn't call it unfair to the players. They still get paid, more in fact, since they don't have to contribute to escrow. And they always have the option to not report to the AHL and have their contract terminated. I don't blame players like Redden for not doing it. He won't get anywhere near that money on a new contract. But ultimately it is his choice. He isn't stuck there if he doesn't want to be.

But I do agree that they need to do something with buyouts in general in the next CBA. Right now, the penalties are too much. Keep the monetary payouts the same, but change the way the cap hits work. My suggestion would be to reduce the cap hit based on the number of years left as follows:

New Cap Hit = Old Cap Hit / (# of years remaining at buyout + 1) * # of years remaining

So if the player has 1 year left at 5 mil, his new cap hit would be 50% of that:

5 / (1 + 1) * 1 = 2.5

2 years left:

Year 1: 5 / (2 + 1) * 2 = 3.33 (66%)
Year 2: 5 / (2 + 1) * 1 = 1.67 (33%)

3 years left:

Year 1: 5 / (3 + 1) * 3 = 3.75 (75%)
Year 2: 5 / (3 + 1) * 2 = 2.5 (50%)
Year 3: 5 / (3 + 1) * 1 = 1.25 (25%)

Redden's buyout would become:

Year 1: 6.5 / (2 + 1) * 2 = 4.33
Year 2: 6.5 / (2 + 1) * 1 = 2.167

Since the actual salary in each year isn't considered, there is a guaranteed savings in the first year (Buying out the last 3 years of Richards' contract under the current system would actually increase his cap hit for those years). Each year you get more of the cap space back. And the cap hits finish just as quickly as they would without the buyout.

I found this in regards to Redden. This is probably what insider is talking about:

http://www.snyrangersblog.com/2012/0...n-wade-redden/

Quote:
According to Tim Wharnsby on Hockey Night in Canada, two teams looked into the idea of bringing in Wade Redden on re-entry waivers this season.
Which means absolutely nothing since the Rangers would have had no interest in placing him on re-entry waivers.

If the next CBA has a clause about sending players to the minors and there are no amnesty buyouts, we could have a problem, but I think that's unlikely. The NHLPA wanted players in the AHL to not count against the cap. They want the rich teams to have ways to overspend the cap.

For the Philly/Pitt game, this is my hope.

Philly wins 5-3. Wayne Simmonds scores all 5 goals and Geno scores the hatty.

Those two GMs should be fired for wasting their time looking into something with zero chance of happening.

1-0 Pitt. What an awful start for the Flyers/Great start for the Pens. Pens are skating circles around them.
