Sami Salo - Healthy, Lovin' It and NOT Planning to Retire

Ben Kuzma with a feature article on Sami Salo. At 37 he is aging like fine wine... or good scotch while remaining an integral part of the core.

Sami is poised to play the most games he has put up since the 2003-04 season when he played 74 - this season if he is not rested again he will play 69 games. This year he has only missed with a mild groin strain (4 games) and the predatory hit from the little puke Brad Marchand that concussed him (6 games) and Coach Vee has rested him in 3 games but as Vigneault acknowledges the rest was over Salo's objections.

While Coach Vee may have wanted to rest him on one of the back to backs with Dallas and Calgary, with Aaron Rome, KB3 and KB4 out Sami played and he says he feels great.
"I felt really good in them," said Salo. "Maybe a well-oiled engine gets better when you use it. I haven't felt fatigue or anything at all. A good base was having a good summer with proper training and luck has been on my side except for the Marchand hit because I could have broken my neck. I've maybe paid a little bit more attention to recovery and trying to take the optional skates off and reserving energy and it seems to be working.

"It was interesting because I didn't need it [rest] last trip. We discussed it briefly and I agreed with whatever they decided."
And as Sami says he has no plans to retire after this season:
"For sure, I'll be playing somewhere next year," said Salo. "I feel really good and the key has been being healthy and playing with a lot of good teammates has made it fun."
And Chris Tanev and MAG both say Salo is great mentor - and on-ice coach.
"He's a great player and a person," said Gragnani. "He's very quiet but very serious and very professional. You learn so much and it's good for our future. He's always even-keeled — never too high or too low."
At 37 Sami brings calmness and consistency to the back end, not to mention a world class shot. He should be in the mix for next season as well. As he says about this year's edition of the Canucks:
"There's a quiet confidence, but we're not overly confident for sure. We know how things can change over the course of a playoff series and we have to prepare to get our game in top shape and go from there."

That's great to hear. Hopefully he'll sign with us next year for the same or smaller cap hit while having a smaller role on the team. As great as he is I still feel it's best he's used sparingly.

Great bottom pairing guy next year. Can mentor any number of young defenceman not quite ready for top 4 duties.

A Sami Salo musical tribute- think Paul Robeson's bass voice belting it out to the tune of Old Man River... (not Old Man Recchi).

Ol' man Sami,
Dat ol' man Sami
He mus' know sumpin'
But don't say nuthin',
He jes' keeps rollin'
He keeps on rollin' along.

He don' make errors,
He don' miss assignments,
An' dem dat does 'em
is soon forgotten,
But ol'man Sami,
He jes keeps rollin' along.

Canucks an' Sami, we sweat an' strain,
Body all achin' an' racket wid pain,
Tote dat puck!
Lif' dat stick!
Git a little drunk
An' you land in jail.

Ah gits weary
An' sick of tryin'
Ah'm tired of livin'
An' skeered of dyin',
But ol' man Sami,
He jes' keeps rolling' along.

Finnish folks work on de ice rink,
Finnish folks work while de Russkie folks play,
Pullin' dose shifts from de dawn to sunset,
Gittin' no rest till de shootout day.

Don't look up
An' don't look down,
You don' dast make
De French Coach frown.
Bend your knees
An' bow your head,
An' pull date rope
Until you' dead.

Let me go 'way from the ice rink,
Let me go 'way from de French Coach boss;
Show me dat trophy called de Coupe Stanley,
Dat's de ol' Cup dat I long to hold.

O' man Sami,
Dat ol' man Sami,
He mus' know sumpin'
But don' say nuthin'
He jes' keeps rollin'
He keeps on rollin' along.

Good ol' Sami forever keeps rollin' on...

He don' make errors,
He don' miss assignments,
An' dem dat does 'em
Is soon forgotten,
but ol' man Sami,
He jes' keeps rollin' along.

Good ol' Sami keeps hearing dat song.
Us an' Sami, we sweat an' strain,
Body all achin an' racked wid pain.
Tote dat puck!
Lif' dat stick!
Git a little drunk
An' you land in jail.

Ah, gits weary
An' sick of tryin'
Ah'm tired of livin'
An' skeered of dyin',
But ol' man Sami,
He jes'keeps rollin' along!

How can you not love this man?

I hope he gets his cup and I hope he's back next year playing beside a young d-man all season.

Too bad Tanev is a right side D (re: 3rd pairing duties for Salo next season).

This could be a great stop gap if Weber becomes a UFA, we run with Salo for one more season then when he retires we go after Weber if he hits UFA.

I'd love Salo back on the same deal he signed this summer.

Absolutely sign him for another year if the opportunity presents itself. At this point, perhaps bottom pairing responsibilities would be in order, although he can still crank it on the PP. Regardless, it'd be great to see him in the jersey.

If anyone deserves a cup on this team, it's Sami. Battled through so much to get to this point in his career, good on Salo.

I hope by saying he'll be playing somewhere... he means Vancouver. If he doesn't retire, MG better start talking extension!! Then again i doubt he's going anywhere. He has already given the team 2x hometown discount (with the recent one being crazy... 2mil for a top 4 dman is unheard of, even Mitchell cost 3.5).

I think his injury history played a large role in that discount.
