you can do all the scouting in the world... you are still dealing with teenagers.
it's like scouting high school teenagers, from an academic perspective, and being able to decide which ones (based on their performance in high school) are going to be wildly successful in their careers after college.
on top of that, outside the top of the draft, you don't get to choose any valedictorians.
really though what is their to tear down? basically the only tradable guys with value are Pominville, Vanek, Roy, Regehr, Miller, and a few others
guys like Hodgson, Ennis, Foligno, Myers, McNabb are just getting their feet wet in the NHL
This is OT to the draft: They've retooled a bit but right now Vanek and Roy are the featured players on this team who I don't think can get it done. Taking the top ToI guy and the highest paid player on the team and moving them out while identifying and acquiring young players and select vets to retool the lineup is actually tearing it down.

Is trading up really worth it in this draft? this draft seems like the biggest crap shoot of any in the past few years, a guy like Ceci could go #7 or #18, Making 4 picks in the first 50 might be the best idea

That's what you pay your scouting staff and died-in-the-wool hockey people (if you have any) to decide. The gamble is on getting up high enough to make the pick. It takes some no bull **** assessment from the scouting staff to make that determination.

all depends on what the opportunities. but that could very well be the case.
im big on Faksa, so if he is there at 8, im calling each team trying to trade up

ya i guess, and not saying this draft is a crap shoot in which players will bust and what not, saying it because i think lots of teams will have players ranked all over the board
seems like their are a number of very good players available even in the 2nd round
Also does anyone think Faksa will slide with his concussion?

every draft is a crap shoot with busts all throughout the first round
Jame how is Hertl's skating? is their any question marks about it?
it's a weakness right now. but it didn't hold him back at the world juniors.
i think his game (skating and style) would remind you of Leino... he carries the puck well, and gets around the ice ok.... but he has more finish and offensive skill then leino

i like Hertl with the nashville pick
I dont know how confortable I am if skating is an issue, I do like his size and offensive abilities though
As promised, here are the top 10 players Central Scouting ranked in each league. In order to maintain some level of confidentiality, the players are listed in alphabetical order.
Keep in mind, this is the closest thing you'll get to a finalized list until the actual release of the "Big Chart", tentatively scheduled for April 9. The number beside each league represents the projected amount of first-round picks from that league's top 10.

It would suck if you guys missed the playoffs but picking 11th isn't really that bad. Many good players have gone in drafts after the top 10, and you guys have one of them in Ennis.
A guy like Faksa who is steadily rising could easily be available @ 10-12.

Its looking like 11th will be our number, but we still have NSH 1st(20ish) and 4 picks in the 1st 42 selections and 5 in the first 71 picks
The Sabres have gotten McNabb, Kassian(turned to Hodgson), Ennis, and others all later than top 10,
also at 11 the sabres are gauranteed one if these players if they choose so..
Yakupov, Grigorenko, Forsberg, Murray, Dumba, Galchenyuk, Reilly, Reinhart, Trouba, Ceci, Gaunce, Faksa, and some others, their seems to be a drop off after the 4th pick and again after the 12th pick so who knows what happens

That actually makes me a little bit happy about our current situation haha. Especially Nashville's pick at 20ish that's pretty low pick with all considering.
After the third pick we'll see the first drop-off. If you recall our Top 50 prospects list, our Top 3 (Yakupov, Grigorenko and Forsberg) are the only prospects I graded in the "A" range. That's the cutoff for what I consider the elite prospects this season. We see the next drop at the No. 10 pick, and that drop appears to be a significant one, but that does not mean teams picking later in the draft will not get a quality prospect.
However, keep in mind 2 things:
1.) This article is 2 weeks old
2.) The goofball author has us taking Morgan Rielly, with Galchenyuk et al still on the board......
the Sabres will need to trade up if they want one of the top 5 forwards. (yak, grig, fors, galch, faksa)
imo
I think at 11 Gaunce will be there but I dont know if they rank him as highly as Faksa, I think its fairly certain that Yakupov, Grigorenko, Forsberg, and Galchenyuk will be gone by then. I doubt Faksa makes it past Anaheim or Carolina

i love Gaunce. And would love to draft Gaunce. But he lacks the explosive offensive skills of the top 5 guys.

If he can become the next Ryan O'Reilly I would be complety fine taking him, be brings so much more to the table then offensive production, he is the type of player that other teams hate to play against, something we dont have much of. Alot of the same question marks about his offense were questioned in O'Reilly and Landeskog last season. Its too early to tell but I would be thrilled with any of those fowards.
