From NHLPA.com, some interesting stats on Oates...

Anyone can look this up of course, but I thought I'd lay it out for easy perusal:

Adam Oates

--------ES Minutes/GP---PP Minutes/GP----SH Minutes/GP--Overall
98/99-----14.47-------------3.73--------------2.34-------------20.54
99/00-----15.84-------------3.48--------------2.98-------------22.29
00/01-----14.06-------------4.43--------------2.48-------------20.99
01/02-----15.98-------------4.53--------------1.36-------------21.86
02/03-----14.09-------------4.34--------------0.18-------------18.61

From this, I would garner that Oates is a pretty young 41 years of age. He looks like someone who only last year started to show the signs of old age. He still plays just as much as he ever did on the PP, but his SH time has dwindled to basically zero. Considering the extra stress involved in working on a penalty killing unit, that's not surprising. His ES time has stayed fairly consistent. 16 to 18 minutes a night from him doesn't look at all out of the question.

One stat I noticed that I really liked about him...

----------------------98/99----99/00----00/01----01/02----02/03
Faceoff % (reg)-------59%------57%-----59%-----56%------58%
Faceoff % (playoffs)---(DNP)----68%-----68%-----62%------61%

This guy is an ANIMAL in the faceoff dot, consistently above the 60% range in the pressure cooker of the playoffs. I think we can expect this, if nothing else about him comes true.

He's obviously not the same guy he was, but he's also obviously not another Doug Gilmour either. This guy still has something left in the tank.

Even if it's only for this year or the deadline, considering we gave up NOTHING BUT $$ to get him, this is nothing but a good deal all the way around. I am stoked.

Great stuff! I was actually going to post a question about this in another thread, so thanks for the info. I was wondering specifically about his stats in the last year or two compared to his career numbers, which we heard a lot about with the signing. Good to see that some of the most important numbers are still high for him. We don't care too much about the PK time dwindling, although I could see him out once in a while to take some important faceoffs once his conditioning is up to par. Hell, maybe even if it isn't...

I wonder how much the Oilers' speed is going to affect those numbers. The more he has to work at catching up to the play might diminish some of his icetime if he becomes too exhausted. I'm sure that will be a concern at least early on in his tenure. Oates had better be working on his skating. :p

I believe he had guys like Kariya and Sykora as linemates at times, and he seemed to do OK there.

I agree though, he's about to get a bit of a workout. The Oilers' style seems a fair bit harder on the cardio than the trap-happy Ducks.
