Is respect earned? Does Koivu have it in the dressing room?

Agreed. Jason Allison would be a much better fit!

Yeah I know...I can't beleive that we have him as our captain for the next 3 years

But seriously, he can't have the respect of everyone...some player will like him, some will not. IMO, he's a good captain/player. With the way he played in the olympics, I think he can do a little bit more for us.

Who knows Toshiro ? Honestly. My guess is that he has lots of respect, maybe not as much personal affection. He has a knack of knowing how to empty the tank in big games. I believe players notice that, and in return respect it.
My own take is that he's very businesslike and expects others to do the same. It may or may not be cultural, but I don't think he sees himself as an evangelical minister type , preaching passionnately for a rally.

I think those guys are basically just media created stories anyways.

I don't know any of this stuff, I can say that I've heard sneaky behind the back gossip of most players dating back to and including Beliveau.

Maybe your question is more about the role of the C in hockey, I can't see how any of us 'know' any different.

I don't get this... Why would Koivu not have respect in the dressing room?

Actually, if you really want to know, you should ask someone that actually is IN the dressing room... Anyone else can only speculate (!)

Totally agree. Only those people around the team at all times, players, coaches, maybe some of the equipment staff, might be able to say if he has the respect of most of the players in the room. You would think a change would have been made if he didn`t though.

Who on this team is in a position to slag Koivu? Surely not the wriggly worm, not Zednik, not Ryder, not Bulis, not Bonk, not Sundstrom, not Dandenault, not Souray, not Bégin, not Bouillon, not Downey, and most of all not Théodore. The rookies and Komisarek wouldn't say anything. I doubt whether Huet, Markov, Rivet, or Kovalev would.

What Gainey should do is grab some of these malingerers by the scruff of their neck and bang their heads together.

amen!!

Im keping a track on all these koivu hatters. The same people who's trashing koivu now are the ones that were praising him for his playoff performance againts the bruins two years ago and probably be the same one praising him if he has another solid playoff run.

If theres one thing I learned with koivu is that he brings his game up to another level when there important or when games are on the line. He allways has. Hes a carrer 34 points in 40 games in the playoffs. The montreal canadiens need koivu for the playoffs. plain in simple

People can bash kovalev and koivu all they want but when playoffs are here they wont disapoint. You take away these two and no one this roster is playoff prouven.

The reason why the habs have never been able to make it past the second round lately is that koivu and kovalev has no support in the playoffs. Take koivu off our roster and it will be early first round exits for the next 10 years.

the last time that the captaincy was up for grabs in Montreal in 1999, the players did a vote of who they wanted to be the captian of their team. Koivu got the most votes.

I know alot of players have moved on from this organization since then but it gives you the general feeling that koivu really is resepcted. The guy is an inspiration to me personally.
