Hagelin? I cant agree although a good rookie.

i can guarantee this opinion will change with a new rookieand every single year it will......PPL get stoked about someone, but dont look at the overall picture...

It looks like Hagelin is winning out. I can't help but wonder if DZ's sophomore slump and the recent memory of Hagelin's play is impacting the poll.

For me it comes down to DZ at 19 and Hagelin at 23 is a huge difference as is playing defense vs forward....if you want to hide John Scotts poor play, you dress him as a forward not on defense.

I really want this poll to be about their rookie seasons however your post really wants me to say...DZ is still 2 years younger than Hagelin, imagine how good he'll be in two years. If one feels that they had equally good seasons, age has to be a consideration considering how young DZ was.

I just dont see why with how good Hags has played this season. Its not a big deal it more that i think Hagelin should be recognized for how good hes been so far.
I think you're misinterpreting a highly touted rookie for undermining someones performance. If the Rangers had Nail Yakupov as a prospect and I said I believed he could have the best rookie campaign, I think that's a testament of how good Yakupov is, not undermining the play of any of these 3 players.

The poll didn't include an "other" option because it's between these 3 players whom IMO, have had extremely close to compare, stellar rookie seasons. Posts later in the thread are just continuing the conversation.

it's soooo much harder to play D than forward...i would think pretty much anyone who plays hockey would realize that. MDZ, AINEC IMHO.

that last sentence was all abbreviations, heh.

You have to take the ages into consideration. Hagelin and Stepan were more mature when they stepped into the league, while Del Zotto was still a teenager. To come in as a 19 year old and QB an NHL power play is pretty significant.

This is the problem with things like this. People have different standards. Personally, I don't think age really comes into the equation. It's another external factor like a sophomore slump. A rookie is a rookie regardless of age.

Del Zotto was a specialist in his first season. Hagelin plays in any situation. That to me makes Hagelin a better rookie.

I agree i started out playing both positions.....stuck with D and loved it,yet, its harder and more stressful a position,IMO. i actually liked it alot more than playing FWD. I liked playing under pressure,I always played d first then worried about offense.

I am going with Stepan.

He was also a very young 20 year old, he killed all year, played on the PP only in spots and STILL scored 21 goals which is not a easy thing to do. He also never played an AHL game to prepare for the NHL. I also think he is backing it up with another solid year!!

The inherent problem with giving him the award based upon playing D being harder is that he didn't play D. Stats wise what DZ did as a rookie was impressive, but he was such a liability defensively that I cannot justify voting for him. To me, it is between Step and Shaggy, and Step is just such a complete player at 20 years old, it must go to him.
