i was looking at the highlights from the sabres game last night and saw this comment from a leafs fan
A seven-year-old Toronto, Ontario boy was at the center of a Toronto city courtroom drama yesterday when he challenged a court ruling over who should have custody of him. The boy has a history of being beaten by his parents and the judge initially awarded custody to his aunt, in keeping with child custody law and regulations requiring that family unity be maintained to the ...degree possible. The boy surprised the court when he proclaimed that his aunt beat him more than his parents and he adamantly refused to live with her. When the judge then suggested that he live with his grandparents, the boy cried out they also beat him. After considering the remainder of the immediate family and learning that domestic violence was apparently a way of life among them, the judge took the unprecedented step of allowing the boy to propose who should have custody of him. After two recesses to check legal references and confer with child welfare officials, the judge granted temporary custody to the Toronto Maple Leafs, whom the boy firmly believes are not capable of beating anyone.
Potentially good news for the Sabres if Tim Thomas starts in Ottawa tomorrow night:
Quote:
It's very possible that Tuesday night could be the end of Marty Turco's NHL career.
The veteran goaltender likely played his last game with the Boston Bruins, a 5-3 loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins at TD Garden. The 10-year NHL veteran finished with 22 saves.
With only two regular-season games remaining for Boston, starting goalie Tim Thomas will make one start and Anton Khudobin, who was called up from Providence of the AHL on Monday, will likely get the nod in the other game as Tuukka Rask (groin/abdomen) continues to progress with his rehab in hopes of being ready for the playoffs.
The Bruins won't be able to start their playoffs at home next Thursday because
the Celtics have a home game on Wednesday - the day the NHL playoffs start.
Thus if Thomas played against Ottawa, he would have almost a week off between
starts. Even though "old guy" Thomas would probably like as much rest as possible -
thats just too much rest. So expect the Bruins to play Khudobin against the Senators
on Thursday with Thomas against the Sabres on Saturday. LS..
NHL should take a key from English soccer and play 15 games all at the same time on the last day. That really bothers me that the Caps will know what they have to do before they play.
Not necessarily. The Caps might still have a shot at the division, with the Panthers playing later that night.
But yeah, it would be nice to have the games at the same time. They could even do what the NFL does, which is move some games but not all so that there is still drama in the later ones.
If anything I'd see it as the exact opposite. Sit TT so Ottawa doesn't get any ideas about jostling him prior to the playoff showdown next week.
I think some are having this debate over on Boston's board. Play your top players and beat them at their place to send a message prior to the series, or rest your guys to avoid malicious hits/injury and then start ramping up for the playoffs against Buffalo.

Or, the Caps know their game is meaningless after Buffalo clinches 8th moments after puck drop.
A Buffalo win and a Florida win tomorrow night is the only way Buffalo can have control of its own destiny heading into Saturday, so that is what I'm rooting for.
A Washington win tomorrow night may leave it possible to catch either WSH or FLA, but we'll need scoreboard help on Saturday to do either.

Not exactly.
A Buffalo OT loss plus Florida regulation win also give us control of our own destiny.

Scenarios go in this order of benefit:
1) BUF reg win, FLA reg win <- BUF clinches with win Sat or just getting to OT or caps any loss
2) BUF reg win, FLA OT win <- BUF clinches with win Sat or OTL & caps any loss or caps reg loss
3) BUF reg win, WAS reg win <- BUF clinches with win Sat & FLA reg loss or BUF win & caps any loss
4) BUF reg win, WAS OT win <- BUF clinches with win Sat & caps reg loss
The scenarios for an OT loss are so complex I'm not even going to bother, but as LDS notes a FLA reg win with BUF OTL tomorrow also is pretty good. Same situation as scenario 2 above.

Reason: scenario 1 is caps ANY loss, not just reg loss as before
1) BUF reg win, FLA reg win <- BUF clinches with win Sat or just getting to OT or caps reg loss
2) BUF reg win, FLA OT win <- BUF clinches with win Sat or OTL & caps any loss or caps reg loss
3) BUF reg win, WAS reg win <- BUF clinches with win Sat & FLA reg loss or BUF win & caps any loss
4) BUF reg win, WAS OT win <- BUF clinches with win Sat & caps reg loss

Scenario # 3&4 also clinch with a Buf OT loss against Boston and a Washington regulation loss.
Here are the OT loss scenarios
1) Buf OT loss, FLA reg win--Buf clinches with a win, a Caps regulation loss, or an OT loss and a Caps loss of any kind.
2) Buf OT loss, FLA OT win--Buf clinches with a win AND a Caps loss, or a OT loss AND a Caps regulation loss
3) Buf OT loss, Washington win (reg or OT)--Buf clinches with a win AND a Caps regulation loss
Florida clinches with a Buffalo OT loss regardless
Now for the loss:
1) Buf regulation loss, FLA regulation win--Buf clinches with a win and a Caps loss, or a OT loss and a Caps regulation loss
2) Buf regulation loss, FLA OT win--Buf clinches with a win AND a Caps regulation loss
3) Buf regulation loss, Caps win (regulation or OT)--Buf eliminated
1) BUF reg win, FLA reg win <- BUF clinches with win Sat or just getting to OT or caps reg loss
2) BUF reg win, FLA OT win <- BUF clinches with win Sat or OTL & caps any loss or caps reg loss
3) BUF reg win, WAS reg win <- BUF clinches with win Sat & FLA reg loss or BUF win & caps any loss
4) BUF reg win, WAS OT win <- BUF clinches with win Sat & caps reg loss

Scenario #1 also clinches with any Caps loss on Saturday. Doesn't have to be in regulation.
1) BUF reg win, FLA reg win <- BUF clinches with win Sat or just getting to OT or caps reg loss
2) BUF reg win, FLA OT win <- BUF clinches with win Sat or OTL & caps any loss or caps reg loss

Caught that in my ninja-edit. That's just scenario 2 but everything moves back a point.
1) Buffalo wins tomorrow night.
2) Florida wins tomorrow night in regulation.
3) Buffalo loses the early game on Saturday in regulation.
4) In the late game, the Rangers and Caps go to OT and then the shootout.
The Rangers would be in a position of literally deciding their first round opponent. If they win the shootout, they'd play Buffalo. If they throw the shootout, they'd play Washington.

In general, when teams don't knock their potential first round opponent out when they had the chance, it ends up coming back to haunt them (or at least it feels that way).
2 thoughts just crossed my mind:
first: for which result do we actually hope in that game obv a regulation win, but for whom?
second: how about a gdt for that one? just because it is such an important piece of hockey ´for this very final playoff push?
Florida, it's not even close. And I don't see a point, that's all that gets talked about it in the scoreboard watching thread but if people think it's useful then so be it.

Yep - have to route for FLA. In order to get by Washington, we just have to get 1 more point than they do. That could be 4 points for BUF and 3 for WSH, or 3-2, 2-1 or even 1-0, and it doesn't matter what Florida does. That leaves many different scenarios where we could succeed.
On the other hand, the only way we get past Florida is BUF goes 2-0-0, WSH goes 2-0-0 and FLA goes 0-2-0. That's only 1 winning scenario with 3 teams involved. That's extremely unlikely.
