I think part of it has to do with the players ability when he retires. Andy was still near the top of his game when he retired. If you know you can still do it, it probably eats at you knowing that in a couple years your physical ability will be gone forever. When a guy gets old and completely runs out of gas, you hardly ever see a guy like that attempt a comeback.
Then why retire? I don't remember the circumstances, but Pettite only started 21 games his last year in the bigs. I don't remember if he got hurt, or he started mid season ala Clemens or maybe it was the suspension? I really don't remember.
Still, it's just so annoying how these guys can't just retire and stay retired.

He needed a year off to build himself back up with the help of the juice
Hell if someone were willing to pay me 2.5 million dollars to play a game Id unretire in a second... I dont blame him though, at lot of these guys legitimately love the game they play, its not easy to just stop playing and stay away... When I had to stop playing intramural baseball when I graduated high school my dad wanted me to help coach but I couldnt do it because I couldnt stand not being on the field
1) That Showtime "The Franchise" series is going to feature the Miami Marlins this year.
2) I'm upset at the outcome of this settlement. The Wilpons need to GTFO ASAP. This all but assures they will remain in control.
As for how they're building the team with an eye towards the future, I actually like it. I don't think they should spend any big $ any time soon. Maybe resign Wright depending on what he does this year. But I really would like to know that the team has the ability to sign that big player if they needed to.

Yuck I want Wright traded asap. The guy is extremely overrated and hasn't been very good in a few years. The Mets need to completely rebuild. Trade him for all they can get (which will be a lot).
And as much as I like Santana I think if he proves that he is healthy they should trade him as well. He could bring back a huge return.

IMO Wright is still a solid/above average player. He's not a superstar and never has been but I don't think you should give up on him after a couple injury plagued seasons. I like him as a player and preferred him over Reyes long term I'd atleast let him play out this year and see how new dimensions affect his play.
As for the Wilpon/Madoff settlement it was probably worst case scenario for the fans. It wasn't anywhere near the big blow that would have been needed for mlb to force them to sell and allows them to stay on as owners. At the same time I do believe they're still broke so we are going to have to endure a few more seasons at the least of frugal spending.
Looks like Johan pitched well today 6 innings 1 run 70 pitches... A very good sign for opening day.

Well that's why I say depending on what he does this year. If he goes back to being an elite hitter, then I'd hope they resign him. If he puts up another bubble all star type of season, then they should probably trade him & rebuild completely.

Because he wanted to spend more time with his family. Also, he had accomplished everything you could accomplish as an athlete throughout his career. He was ready to start the next chapter in his life. But he obviously missed the game too much. I am pretty sure that when he retired he figured he wasn't coming back but you never know how you will feel when you are away from the game for the first time in 20 years.

I think he knew he was going to come back he even said when he was "retiring" the first time that he's definitely not playing this year but there's a chance he'll play again.
On a different topic infamous Met killer Chipper Jones is retiring at the end of this season. Hate him so freaking much but got lots of respect for him as a player here's his career numbers vs NYM:
Quote:
Chipper Jones' career numbers vs. #Mets: .318, 48 HR, 154 RBIs in 812 at-bats.
Joba Chamberlain suffered an open dislocation of his right ankle Thursday afternoon, an accident that derailed his accelerated comeback from Tommy John surgery and might be career-threatening.
A somber and shaken Brian Cashman delivered the news Friday morning, at various points describing the accident as "terrible" and "very significant."
Chamberlain, who was expected to be back in the bullpen by the end of June, underwent surgery on his ankle Thursday night at St. Joseph's Hospital, where he will remain for "a number of days," Cashman said.
Dr. Steven Weinfeld, the Chief of Foot and Ankle Service and Associate Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at the Mount Sinai Medical Center, not only said Chamberlain pitching again this season was unlikely but that the injury could be "career-threatening."
"In the best of circumstances, you would not put weight on it for two to three months, let alone trying to [throw]," Dr. Weinfeld said by phone Friday morning. "It would be very surprising if he pitched at all this year."

how did he end up dislocating it? my phone sucks and i cant get newday articles big enough to read the damn thing. joba is the DP of the yanks...thank god im a mets fan...uhhh wait a minute.
I assure you this is not me being a Yankee hater or anything (Frankly I don't really care what they do unless they're playing the NLE teams). But Pettitte coming back is just so sad. Why can't these athletes retire & stay retired?
