No one is getting more than Datsyuk. I don't want to invest in a defensemen for longer than 3 years. That seems like adequate time to see if he fits in here.
Don't want to pull a Blackhawks and sign a Campbell like contract
On the other hand if Lidstrom retires...we need to try and mend the gap left. If he does leave I'd like to see Holland make a strong push on either a known commodity like Weber or Sutter, or go in a mini rebuild and try and acquire a early first round pick and raise a potential franchise defensemen like Murray, Dumba, or even Seth Jones or Aaron Ekblad. In the mean time filling in the gap with a 2-3 year middle tier defensemen.
This part just doesn't jive with your wants. Like it or not, we aren't getting Weber, Suter or Parise if we place a Datsyuk hard cap on our offer. We are simply in a much different time now with the cap as high as it is. If Dats were up for a contract, he'd be getting 7.5 x 5, but he signed his deal when the cap was much lower. Hate to say it, but if we want to land Suter, then he is going to get paid more than the 1 year deals that Lids has been signing the past couple years.

That's a good point. I don't see a player taking a pay cut just to play here. It wouldn't make sense respect-wise because Datsyuk is one of the best players in the league, but that's a good point that he could be worth a whole lot more now. Inflation is really starting to **** this league. Hope the new CBA fixes that...
I find it funny that so many people seem to be ok with giving Parise whatever it takes when most of them were agaisnt us going after guys like Ryder and Fleishman for almost half the cap hit. Not that I don't agree with it, but I just think people are getting caught up with Parise as a "name player" and hold unrealistic expectations. I'd rather take Semin at 4 million than Parise at 7.5 anyday.
Also the notion that no one should get paid more than Datsyuk is ridiculous. His contract was signed at a time when the cap was significantly lower. It's honestly amazing how a lot of you people don't seem to realize that despite your assurances that you do. You guys are going to be pretty shocked when Filppula gets 4.5 minimum a season.

I don't really consider this guy a lower tier free agent and I think he winds up getting stupid money. But Matt Carle would fit well in the Wings system. Really good outlet pass, blocks a ton of shots. If you miss on Parise, then Semin is the next best in my opinion. If you miss on Suter then Carle is the next best in my opinion. Better than the hype surrounding Schultz at least in the first couple of seasons of the contract.
Stoll would be interesting, he's very good on draws, shoots right and plays physical.
Not sure he'd fit on the top 6 but he'd be a great 3rd or 4th line center
I have liked this move for while, but he already makes pretty good money. He also would be a major asset to the second power play unit on the point, guy has a howitzer back there. He is intriguing to me because he has played on the wing some, plays on both special teams units and is a physical presence. If you put him and Helm together on a shut down line it would be among the best in the entire league and take the first line every night at home. If they can talk him into Cleary's 2.8 million salary I would be extremely happy. The guy is a weapon in that he plays such a well rounded game and really adds punch to our bad special teams units.
I'd take Tootoo. Better than any of the guys one the 4th line now. Atleast Tootoo plays with constant energy and doesn't hide behind the refs. Balls to the wall is his only speed.

If we're going to bring in somebody who is reckless, has hands of stone, and life issues... let's just pick up this guy from the pawn shop.
Semin is bigger, faster, has a better shot, is a 13th overall pick and is 4 years younger. His point per game average isn't much different, either. Richards got 6.6 mil. To think no one would pay Semin 5 mil or more is crazy.
Chicago would throw 5.5 at Semin north of 6 no way KHL at that point.

I'd love tootoo on this team. Perfect guy for a depth line. The guy hits like a truck for someone so small.
It's been repeated, but Semin is one of those classic frustrating players. Worlds of talent that appear and disappear at a moments notice.
It would be interesting to pair him with Datsyuk, but it could be a huge bust, too. Who knows. It's a gamble worth looking at, though, assuming other options are tapped.

Ever since watching the special on him about his journey back to the NHL from rehab, I've been a fan of his.
He'd be a great fit for our 4th line but I can't see him leaving Nashville after how well he's been treated by Poile and company. He will probably be a Predator until he retires.
Chicago fans think that you guys will land Suter. I'm not sure we will make a play on him in free agency with $$$ dumped into Keith & Seabrook.
Assuming that the Wings get Suter I wouldn't mind getting Wideman as a consolation prize.
What type of numbers do you Wings fans think it will take to get Suter?
And what type of cash do you think Wideman will make next season?
No opinion on Wideman, but I'd say at least $7 AAV on Suter. We can afford it, but I think you're right about the $$$ in Keith and Seabrook. I can't see Chicago plopping down those type of numbers on Suter when you have over $11 in those two.

I'm surprised nobody has rated Wideman higher. I read somewhere that Washington hates him, but I'm not sure why. The guy is what we NEED on the PP. A right-handed bullet from the point. He's 6 foot. As far as hits go, he had a career high in hits. He blocks shots. He plays on the PK as well. I guess the only knock on him is that he has the habit of making mistakes that usually put the puck in the back of your own net on occasion, but for 11g, 35a, and 46pts i'll take that chance. I say, trade Q's rights and Abdelkader away to try and salvage something for the draft and sign this guy.
Now, onto bottom six forwards. Do we really need one? Isn't Joakim Andersson ready?
and Carle always putting up solid numbers while providing solid D.
There's a reason Philly has signed Grossmann so quickly after the trade rather than Carle.
Maybe the guy could rebound, but he has been one of the weak links defensively for the Flyers this year. I wouldn't want to count on him, let me put it that way.

Not really. Ideally, we sign a top6 guy and he bumps someone down. Tatar and Andersson could both probably handle a job in Detroit next year (though it may help both to have another year in GR). If we sign someone, I think it'll be someone like Moen as a Patrick Eaves PK Replacement. And if we're signing a legit option to take Eaves' role, Eaves probably won't be coming back from that concussion until some point deep into the season.
