The Bobby Heenan Appreciation Thread

Was talking about an old Survivor Series event with a friend and then decided to look up the match on Youtube. I only wanted to see what the Knights looked like originally, but I can't turn it off. Heenan is way, way too funny. It's a shame his throat (?) cancer ruined his voice, or else I'm sure he'd be making appearances a little more often. Or at least I'd like to think he would be.

Such a gem.

Always classic.

Like you I've watched a lot of old wrestling videos in recent years because I wanted to listen to Heenan and Gorilla.

Here he is pissing off Roddy Piper:

Bobby Heenan was always funny on commentary, especially when he was with Monsoon they just meshed well together.

The Rumble Flair wins, Monsoon and Heenan are at their best.

It's not fair to Flair!

I must have missed this back in the day...

but

A. who are those jobbers in the mask, and why are they involved with two of the better wrestler in the WWF at the time..

B. who are the two jobbers (a teacher and fire fighter) on the side of Bret Hart and Owen Hart? I swear to God the WWE was just a train wreck when it came to idiot characters and matches..

A) No clue, but IIRC Lawler was fueding heavily w/Bret and the Harts and was supposed to be in the match. Injured perhaps, so they replaced him w/these clowns.

B) Bruce and Keith Hart, brothers (obviously) of Owen and Bret. I don't remember how they got brought in story-wise but chances are the buildup began w/Lawler picking on them at ringside at a TV taping.

edit: looked it up on Wiki. It doesn't say how the storyline went, but the truth behind it is pretty funny:

Quote:
Lawler was unable to appear at the event, however, as he was indicted after being accusing of ****** and sodomizing a teenage girl, who later admitted to making up the story.[14] Shawn Michaels, who replaced Lawler in the match, also had a rivalry with Bret Hart dating back to the previous year. Hart, who held the Intercontinental Championship for much of 1992, defended the belt against Michaels many times, including in the WWF's first ladder match.[15] They had also wrestled each other in the main event of Survivor Series 1992, when Hart defended his newly-won WWF Championship against Michaels.[16]
So it was supposed to be Lawler and his "knights", but HBK replaced him based off an old feud.

Bruce and Keith got involved because Lawler was merciless towards Stu and Helen. So it was billed as the Hart Family versus the King's Court. They were both wrestlers and champions in the Stampede at one point. The fact Owen was the only one of the brothers eliminated also set up the storyline that he was the baby of the Hart family and did not get the same respect as his older brothers, which is why he turned on Bret.

Also, in regards to the jobbers under the masks......I believe two of them were supposed to be Terry and Dory Funk Jr.......for some reason the day before the match, Pat Patterson came to Terry and said Vince wanted them under hoods in addition to doing the jobs. Terry wanted to talk to Vince saying that was ridiculous when anyone else could go under masks and do the same job, why have two guys with their rep do that. But Vince couldn't be bothered to talk to him about it. Terry called Dory Jr. (who hadn't arrived in town) and told him not bother flying in, and then left a message at the hotel front desk to tell Vince thanks but no thanks.

Bobby was the greatest commentary guy in the history of the business. He and Monsoon together were so amazing. Even Bobby's HOF induction speech is funny until the end when he starts to break down and mentions Gorilla.

I only remember WCW Bobby. But his one liners were still pretty epic then.

I never heard that story but I can tell you who the ended up being the Knights - The Blue Knight was Greg Valentine, The Red Knight was Barry Horowitz and The Black Knight was Jeff Gaylord.

The blue knight definitely looks like ol' Boxcar, that's for sure.

Even here too where just the thought of Gorilla made him tear up.

Apparently this led to Heenan never forgiving Schiavone because he was against any mention of Monsoon on the show since Gorilla never worked for the WCW.
