Don't know anything about this guy but I bet Johnstown fans are wondering where the hell he was 2 years ago.

Guessing he didn't like Johnstown's attendance numbers, which is understandable. Without having the actual stats in front of me, I want to say that Chiefs numbers were on the decline for the last 5-6 years prior to moving.

That being said, it's not like Greenville is turning out record attendance numbers either.

3251/game last season; the last time Johnstown drew that many was in '91-92, and hadn't cracked 3000/game since '94-95. Borderline miraculous that the Chiefs stayed as long as they did.

Didnt someone win the lottery to bail them out once?

Hasnt Wheeling been in a very similar fate?

Not that I know of. I mean it could have happened, but it doesn't sound familar.

I was away from Johnstown for a few years while in the military, but during that time they were still drawing at the gate. I know Neil Smith had somebody from NY "invest" a six-figure amount into the team sometime around 2007 (give or take a year). If you want to go back deep into Johnstown hockey history, Johnstown's first team was financed through their owner hitting a long shot at the horse track. But that was 70 years ago and had nothing to do with the Chiefs.

A lot of their durability had to do with ownership being shuffled around, with each owner being committed to the community and having some connection to the city. A lot of the owners only stuck with the team 2-3 seasons before cutting their losses. Once the previous owner (whose name escapes me....Edwards?) sold to Neil Smith, it was only a matter of time before the writing was on the wall and as Paul Newman once said, "the Chiefs are history".

I wish the Tribune-Democrat archived their Sports section online. Back in the day, probably even as recent as the mid-late 90s, there was a ton of articles on the Chiefs. I'd imagine the ownership changes, the financials, etc. would all be listed.

Wow, really? Didn't think it was that high.

I know there were a few times where I saw on twitter that the attendance was in the mid 2's. Could have been a bad night at the gate too. Just wasn't sure if that was the norm or not.

I see big changes coming for Greenville. Ticket prices for STH are already down ($55 less for my seats). I have no problems with what Neil and Posner did as they put a great on ice product but maybe people from Johnstown can relate. The Marketing for the team seemed kind out of date compared to what nearby Gwinnett and even South Carolina was doing at times. They kept it fresh with diff promotions when we only had a few that were basically what we had last year. Either way I'm optimistic about the new ownership

There was nothing for marketing while he was here. It was almost like he became majority owner, said "**** marketing, we don't need it".

Now I'm sure there were certain factors in it, like corporate sponsorship and Neil being cheap and possibly knowing the long-term future of the franchise before he listed it for sale. But after Smith took over, this team was basically run like it was in safe mode after his second season here. No advertising outside of the arena and minimal advertising inside, no public appearances by the team, nothing on the radio (again, advertising), rarely a free ticket giveaway to at least put people in seats, etc. If you drove through here and turned on the radio or TV, you could barely tell there was a team here after 2004.

Since the team is gone and I'm no longer in Johnstown (for the most part), I just hope he finally learns what it takes to market a minor league team, or at least finds the right person/people to do so.

This new owner-from a financial standpoint- is a dream for any minor league team.

His pocket change could support the losses of an ECHL team. The Road Warriors will be around for as long as this guy wants them to be.

Does he have any connection to the area?

I can find a guy equal to this who I wish would buy our team....
