^Might as well resign Parise? He has a say in this, too. And his one year contract he signed made it obvious he likely wanted out. It reeks of an "avoid the FA drama 'til next season" deal.
Under that scenario I like our chances but not getting excited before he wears the red and white.
just the likelihood of it is pretty low, with too many things having to fall in our favor. Both would have to hit the open market, both would have to want to sign here, and both would have to (likely) not chase bigger contracts elsewhere. It's one of those things that technically could happen, but has almost zero chance of actually happening.
remember the summer of 2001 when they picked up robitaille hull and hasek? detroit has a winning tradition like no other franchise in hockey. just like the patriots, yankees and lakers attract some of the best talent in their sports, great players love coming to detroit because of the winning tradition. its been proven over the past 2 decades.
Sorry Jeff, but my friend lives on the upper west side and she makes about $160,000 a year. I am pretty sure it's not the "Cost of Living" in NYC that is keeping Parise from signing a deal with the Devils.
I'm not saying that it is a huge consideration but if they want him to take a hometown discount it is like earning half of a market value contract in Detroit/St. Louis/Buffalo. A hockey player's career is relatively short as compared to whatever your friend does and a smart player will always always look for ways that he can accumulate the most during his short career. On the other hand, NYC has cultural and nightlife opportunities that can't be found anywhere else, so it all depends on his priorities. My argument comes from my business side. As a Financial planner I always consider those things.

You're forgetting that players make way more in endorsements in large markets like NYC. I'd wager those endorsements far outweigh any cost of living expenses.
You don't get this kind of exposure in Texas, despite the modest cost of living and tax breaks...
Just for perspective on Jiri Hudler and the concept of adding a top 6 player:
the top 6 player over 30 nhl teams is 180 guys. coming 180 in goals is drew miller and is 14 goals. Hudler has 25 -25 for 50 points
Unless we trade for Nash or sombody else, or sign parise/semin we wont be able to find a better player than jiri hudler to play in our top 6. We should hope he stays in detroit

For real. We need to take a good look at every top six in hockey. No team is as stacked as we're expecting. Every team has some guys like Huds.

I agree with this.
But at the same time Hudler is kind of a unique, skilled player. He has limited strengths that you have to play to. I like to equate him to Jussi Jokinen.
The question is if that's the type of guy you want to keep or do you go for somebody bigger/faster/hitter/etc. Take your pick.

Well I live here in the NYC metro area, and I can not recall a hockey player in any advertisements. The Yankees, Mets, Giants, Jets and Nicks are all compeeting for those endorsements. I'm sure if Zack went to Detroit he could take Mule's Ram Truck ads and also do a spot for Dr. Rhamani. The reality is that hockey doesn't rule here even with the popularity of the Rangers.

Nyquist makes Hudler expendable. You can slot Gus into Hudler's spot without blinking and go after a guy that will impact the game with size or speed. Easy call.
