I'm about 15 hours in and this might be the most confusing story I have ever played.
The crap bounces back and forth and inside and out leaving you with questions at ever turn.
If i wasn't using a guide i would have no way of knowing what time period to go back to and which of the 2-3 gates from that time I need to use to go to advance the story since half the time it does not guide you at all what you need to do.
Charcator development has been just as bad as it was in FFXII. Two people you use all game that have no connection at all.
And i enjoyed FFXIII, so i figured this would be better.
So far this is going right next to FFXII as the worst FF of all time. I still have half a game so hopefully it really improves.
Eh I have some hours into it but got burned out and even bored of it. Will eventually get back to it but I have better JRPGs to play and finish. Kind of done with them after them saying they are including towns and saying it's more open when really you're just clicking on different time gates and that's basically your town and area.
Because people complained that XIII was too linear.
Now you get to whine that it's not linear enough.
I can't really comment on FFXIII because I've yet to play it, still have to buy a PS3. And while understand what you're saying it's still a pretty basic formula to follow with a JRPG.
I would say the classic JRPG beyond the turn based combat/grind has 5 different elements to it:
1. Overworld - adds a sense of exploration
2. Towns - adds a little bit of sanctuary to relax and take a break from the grind
3. Dungeon's - adds a challenge to overcome
4. Puzzles - whether a straight forward puzzle or figuring out what to do next, adds a a mental challenge to the mix
5. Story/characters- holds everything together and keeps you playing to the end
In my opinion the formula works well because the different elements play off of each other to balance things out. You can tinker around with aspects of it emphasizing some areas more than others, and as the technology has improved they've certainly done so, but if you start just outright cutting parts of it you'll start to lose that nostalgic feeling of playing a JRPG. If you streamline everything out so that your game breaks down into a single long sequence of story/grind/story/grind/story/story/etc it can get tiresome.
I really think Square is thinking too hard with the Final Fantasy series, they should take inspiration from a game like Dragon Quest VIII which was a perfect blend of the old and the new. People will probably buy it because it's Final Fantasy and the core fanbase would love it. If they keep doing what they're doing you gotta wonder how long the Final Fantasy name will remain a triple AAA IP.
Nope. And im the biggest FFgeek who will ever write in this thread Still belive that 13versus is what will save the series. It has so much potential and so many awesome ideas. Like an overworld and a ship to fly in. But what i think is the most cool thing, barley no sci fi, it takes place in "modern time".
JUst dont feel motivated. FF feels like the past, not the future or present. It takes too long between the realeses and when a game comes it sucks, big time. XIII had some really good stuff but running straight forward for that long with the most awful story in the series...... it was a mental challange.

Seriously, these guys have created some of the most memorable games I've ever had the pleasure of playing, but recently you should proceed with caution. I wouldn't trust a word they say, they blatantly lie about things.
I completed it 100% in less than a week. This is just the style of games I like. I liked the story and didn't find it confusing, I loved the levelling system and I loved being able to have pets to fight with you. The world is bigger and not as linear as XIII, but not too open so that you get lost. And finally, the battles are much more exciting than they were in XIII... yes it can still be pressing X/A the whole time, but still. Oh, and the cutscenes have astonishing graphics.

Becuse they have. From what i have read in interviews etc i have come to the understanding that they have. There are tons of footage out there showing not just cool looking cgi but also gameplay. I remember reading about this game a year or 2 and that Nomura said that the game world was so huge they had to make it smaller becuse they got lost
There is alot of information about this game out there where they talk on how long they have been working on it and what they done.
The new Final Fantasy spinoff theaterrythm (Musicgame) actully has a song from 13versus on it.
so i played it and beat it recently. didnt get all the endings and didnt wanna play to get them all so just watched the rest on YT.
the game is okay (better than FFX-2, although anything is better than that garbage - only game i could not finish). the story is really slow at first but kinda picks up.... not so different from ff13.
its kinda cool that it has different endings. that and different time periods are the only thing that reminds me of CT. But CT was one of the greatest RPGs of all time, this isnt even close.
i absolutely hate how it ended though. its sad to see how square enix has changed to put in an ending like that. to milk this game through DLCs and maybe perhaps a 3rd sequel. the square (enix) i knew, would never do something like that. even FFX had a proper ending if you werent gonna play FFX-2.
Played the first three hours and it's meeting my rather low expectations. Everything I read about the story so far is true, but I'm a gameplay>story gamer anyway, I can take a crap story if the gameplay is good. Hopefully I get the ability to get monsters in my party soon, that was my favorite part about Dragon Quest VIII
