[CBJ/LAK] Jeff Carter for Jack Johnson and a Conditional 1st Round Pick
I hate to bump this, but I have an interesting question that I do not recall seeing the answer to in this thread, unless I am having a 1 a.m. go to bed moment.
Barring an epic collapse, the Kings *should* get into the playoffs. One of the conditions of this Carter trade was that in the event the Kings make it, the CBJ can decide which year to claim the Kings' first rounder, 2012 or 2013.
How long do the Jackets have to make this decision? Is it a certain date before the draft? X amount of days after the Kings officially make the playoffs?
I think they have to do it before the Stanley Cup Finals end, so that way the Kings know if they can trade that pick this year or not.
I could be wrong, but that's always been my understanding.
Also, pending who is selected with the King's 1st either this year or next and unforeseen debacle, I think this trade can be said to be one where both parties won.
With this draft said to be not very deep, I think the Kings would benefit more if Columbus took the pick this year. Now, it all depends on how far the Kings advance in the playoffs as draft pick position is now determined by a team's playoff finish. If Columbus thinks the Kings will be better next season, then it would be wise of them to elect to use LA's 1st in this year's draft.
If the Kings fail to make the playoffs this season, they will automatically send their first-round pick in 2013 to the Blue Jackets. If Los Angeles qualifies for this spring's post-season, Columbus will have the choice of taking this year's pick or next year's.

@TLyseggen If Kings miss playoffs, pick is in 2013. If Kings make it, CBJ have to decide two picks before Kings would be on clock.

@TLyseggen I should clarify...#CBJ have to notify the Kings no later than two picks before LA would be on the clock.

CBJ have 2 picks prior to the Kings position to submit their decision to take the 2012 pick if they want it. They essentially get to see if there are 3 players on the board they value by the time the Kings would pick and decide if they want to go this year or next.
Granted, I think they trade the pick so I'm not sure how that would work...

I think that both teams did win this one, however I think it does look better from Columbus point of view right now, however it depends who is drafted.
Just daying the potential for Columbus to win it is there.
As far as the trade stands right now, it's a win-win. Slight edge will go to Columbus if the draft pick they get pans out.
Anyways, thanks for the answer to my question. I was curious how that worked out. It'll make me watch the draft a bit longer more intently, that's for sure.
We ALL love him. Some want him to be the next captain if Nash gets traded.
ALso been playing 30+minutes a game as of late. Recently broke the team record(not including ot).

- The Los Angeles Kings clinched a playoff spot on Thursday, giving the Blue Jackets' the possibility of two first-round picks this June. "I was glad to see they made the playoffs, yes," Howson said. "It gives us flexibility." The Blue Jackets acquired a first-round pick from the Kings in the February trade that sent Jeff Carter to the Kings in return for defenseman Jack Johnson. Additiionally, the Jackets were given the right -- should the Kings make the playoffs -- to take the pick in 2012 or 2013. They must notify the Kings of their desires within two picks of Los Angeles' turn during the first round. If Los Angeles had missed the playoffs, the pick would have flipped to 2013. The Blue Jackets hope San Jose beats Los Angeles in the season finale on Saturday so that the Sharks win the division and the Kings are bounced to a lower seed and, thus, a higher draft pick come June.
So, for those saying two picks before, they were right.
And yet he missed on a vital detail. If Los Angeles makes it to the conference finals, the pick is going to be no earlier than 27th overall. That may or may not be earlier than San Jose's, but we won't know for a little while anyway.
