Macbook Pro

So I just got my first Macbook, thus making my first switch from Windows to Mac. What are some essential programs that I should get?

There's no such thing other than maybe the same basic stuff as on Windows (web browsers, Adobe Reader, Dropbox, etc.). It really depends almost entirely on what type of computing activities you do.

The only piece of software that I've found makes OSX personally worthwhile over any current version of Windows is TeXShop. For me it's worth owning an OSX computer for that program alone, but that's because it's what I use for the vast majority of my work.

Also, look into enabling native support for NTFS file systems.

OSX has native PDF viewing.

Get that program that you need to run Windows applications. You'll need it.

I know that, but I find Adobe Reader works better than Preview for certain documents.

I haven't used Windows on my Mac in probably 3 years. Removed the Boot Camp partition a few months too (only ever used it to play a game, but then I got a PS3).

The lack of good apps for the Mac is a problem that was solved long ago. This isn't 1997 anymore, even though I'm sure some people still (ignorantly - not saying you, just in general) see it that way.

Just about everything you can do on a Windows PC, you can do on a Mac.
