Prior to the third game of (a series) against Toronto, the local paper reported that several fans had issued death threats toward both Lindsay and Howe for an alleged injury to the Leaf's Tod Sloan. The game went on as planned despite the threat of a shooting. After Lindsay scored the game winning goal in overtime, he held his stick like a rifle and pointed it at the crowd taunting the Maple Leaf faithful
Apparently the police had taken the death threats so seriously that Howe and Lindsay had a police escort all the way onto the ice prior to the game.
Actually, now that I think about it...is there a more absolutely career defining goal than Henderson's game winner in '72?
Considering the importance of the goal and the fact that Henderson wasn't that spectacular a player otherwise, probably not. But I don't know if I'd call him "an all time great"
the most memorable, but i don't know that it defines him. he did kind of carry that goal around with him for years as a reminder of the player he was supposed to become though.

Agreed, one of the most defining goals ever but yeah, he was definitely not a Great.
I'll go back to Orr flying through the air for all criteria.
I think I'd have to take Mario's goal against Boston that made Ray Bourque look like he'd never worn a pair skates in his life. To be honest, Mario probably has a laundry list of goals that would qualify for this depending on what you were looking for. Deke, 1 on 1, breakaway, laser to beat the goalie, off the draw, etc.
I saw the Minnesota goal live in front of my TV , I feel great about it
I still remember it with my father and uncles yelling in the living room , they looked like a bunch of child after the goal , just as I was (around 8 years old)
To me , it is the greatest goal in hockey history , stanley cup final , sick move , and the kind of goal that completely described what Mario Lemieux was all about.
Guy Lafleur goal on Boston - Game 7, Semi Final (1979)
1994 Pavel Bure's Game 7 Double Overtime Winner vs Calgary.
The speed the moves, everything that defined Bure comes together in what is one of the classic Game 7 OT winners.
Lemieux - Definitely the Northstar goal in 1991. Embodied everything that was great about Lemieux. Long reach, confidence, deking, making a defenseman look like a fool and then beating a goalie out of his jock. All while it is being done rather effortlessly. But...........are we jumping to conclusions and forgetting about the 1987 Canada Cup goal?
Crosby - Is it anything but the Olympic goal? And honestly, unless he scores an overtime goal to win the Cup could anything top that? And would that even top it?
Malkin - Well so far at least I'd have to say the around the net behind the back goal against Carolina in 2009. But in all honesty, that goal against the Lightning earlier this year in one of his hat trick games - wow!
Ovechkin - The Phoenix goal that he couldn't recreate if he tried
Iginla - I am going to say that goal in the 2002 Olympics that pretty much sealed a victory for Canada while the States was pressing pretty hard
Sittler - The 1976 Canada Cup goal
Gretzky - I don't know, if I had to pick one I'd prefer it was more than one in an empty net even though ironically a lot of his record setters were. How about the goal against Smith in the 1984 final on a breakaway? The first goal against the Islanders in either two finals. Or more popular is the 1988 goal vs. Calgary, the shorthanded slapshot over Vernon's shoulder
Messier - the goal in the 1984 final where he deked the Isles defense
Richard - The goal in Game 7 vs. Boston against Jim Henry that Richard claims he doesn't remember because he was so dazed. Not enough footage from his day, but probably his most famous goal
H. Richard - Pick one. The controversial overtime winner in 1966 to win the Cup or the goal against the Hawks in 1971 as the Cup winner
Denis Savard - The goal against Edmonton in the late 1980s. Beating three Oilers players clean and routinely among the prettiest goals ever scored
Lemieux - Definitely the Northstar goal in 1991. Embodied everything that was great about Lemieux. Long reach, confidence, deking, making a defenseman look like a fool and then beating a goalie out of his jock. All while it is being done rather effortlessly. The goal was nothing special , the moment was.The goal didn't really define Lemieux , it was just a great moment with the assist from Gretzky and it was a tremendously important goal , but the goal wasn't very nice compared to 70% of the goals Lemieux scored in his entire career. The clutchness of it could be argued , but the guy was so talented and espiecially at finding holes that I'm not even sure not scoring was in the cards there , big moment or not.If anything , the fact this moment was so important gave Lemieux more chance , he always had a flair for shining in those moment , so he wasn't really the nervous type.
