Before the season there was a poll in the Roll Call of who would win the Cup. Colorado had the most votes. 78 games later the Avalanche are out of the playoffs. What happened? Nobody really knows, but two things that clearly didn't work were the PP and PK ranking 26th in both and 28th combined.
The season started like a dream with the Avalanche going 15-4-2 in the first 21 games. The next 23 games were also a success at 14-8-1. Then something happened and the team went on a season ending nosedive of 9-19-5 falling from 2nd in the league to 17th and out of the playoffs. Adding insult to injury, the Avs don't have a 1st round pick in the upcomming draft.
Here's the playing lineup that missed the playoffs:
What's up next? A Stanley cup roster ending up outside the playoffs. Something will have to be done, heads will roll. As of today the Avalanche are open for business.
It's been a really bizarre year in the Northwest and I don't know how to explain it. Only one team is likely to make the playoffs, and I'm pretty fortunate to be there considering my club's play over the last 25 or so games. Last year three clubs from the NW had at least 103 points
Both your club and mine seemed to lose all momentum when trade deadline acquisitions were brought in, while the Flames sold off some veteran talent and went from the basement to the playoff hunt. Hard to explain. Special teams are one explanation, but then again the Panthers are last in BOTH categories and have 108 points.

shocking with that roster!
maybe Brad Richards would have helped after all?!?!?! looks like he has almost 2 points per game for CHI since the trade.

It's interesting you bring that up because it is quite the head scratcher. Not often you see the worst special teams team in the league winning a conference (which I have the potential to do in the next few days).
I think the only explanation is that special teams just aren't affecting me much. I take the second fewest penalties per game in the league. I've only been shorthanded 150 times this season so far. I've given up 42 powerplay goals. That's like one every two games. Considering I score 3.14 goals per game, it's not affecting me much.
This is even worse than the Blues getting knocked out of the first round every year.
It's gotta be the trade deadline deals. That's what almost sank my team. Splitting up Richards (love that guy) and Pavelski gave me a boost.
No idea why other than low MO from the players you got and a broken sim before this version why your team would tank. Not having a 1st makes it worse.
A good theory, and certainly applies to some teams -- but the Avs only picked up Volchenkov at the deadline, IIRC, and his morale wasn't that bad.
The bigger problem may also be morale-related, and it's the distribution of icetime. As Drew has pointed out, all players in this version of the sim want to play the same amount, even if they don't have the talent. So a conscious effort needs to be made to give all players meaningful minutes, and to switch depth players into the lineup from time to time to keep their ratings up.
When the morale of the players seeing very little icetime started to tank (even with the team winning), it may have dragged down the team's performance, leading to more losses - which in turn pulled down the morale of the star players.
Either that, or Ville pissed off the hockey gods somehow.

20 games ago I realized I was done. And still losing money I demoted 4 players (Anisimov, Berglund et al) who were waiver wire ineligible and then McBain got hurt. I brought up five 50 OV players, all who had 50 MO. The rest of my team was below 30 MO.
Those scrubs brought up my MO so much I've only lost 5 of my last 20.
MO is the only factor that matters in this sim (other than knowing which are the really really bad rosters). No other ratings or line combo's do anything.
Damn, I traded your 1st thinking it would be worth a lot less than my own pick. I think it is time for you to make a radical change with your line up. Maybe have a meeting with Brian Burke and come up with better balance roster.

Is it the only factor that matters when it's turned on? Or the only factor that matters period? If we kill MO for next year it should run a little better shouldn't it?

It's the only thing that matters now. Look at the Avs decline. Ville can thank Robb for that. Look at the Blackhawks slide - after taking my bums and others -- all can be blamed on getting low MO players. An my success after a quarter of my roster with higher MO Players.
What will happen if we turn it off? I really don't know
Next year I'm gonna string along some fourth line bums and get their MO way up, and then farm them out at twice the going rate to teams hoping to make a playoff push
I think everything is ok cause even in NHL we got some surprises....Caps almost didnt make it and on paper is one of the best or the best, Chicago, San Jose....didnt make it: Buffalo-Tampa
Still big teams up there in HFNHL
Panthers
Ducks
Canucks
Predators
........................
look like in NHL some little teams to are on the top now
Blues
Coyotes
big teams that didnt make it in NHL : Montreal (aka devils HFNHL)-Anaheim

Volchenkov was injured for all but the last two games since the trade. I think the earlier Volchenkov trade that brought Orpik in could be the one that turned it around. Orpik is -9 in his 45 games with the Avs. Adding Scuderi didn't help and he was also a scratch for a lot of games as the team lost just about every game he played in.
I don't think the amount of load lines sent in are really the key, or even tell a true story about the amont of lines sent in. The sim allows us to make lines for 10 games in advance and only shows as one load lines. If you don't have many injuries you could go the season with 9 load lines even if you made different line combos for every game.
Obviously when things go bad changes have to be done, but for the first 50 games or so I don't think I had any injuries and just had to play Emery twice when the team was winning. Why would I have made linechanges when everything was working? After things went sour I played around with the roster a fair bit, but it only shows as 15 changes total even if it's probably over 30 line changes.
hmm.. maybe the hockeygods only check the loadlines on the GM page and not the actual changed linecombos..
