He has a killer shot for sure.
Yeah, at the end of last season he was. Won't ever fool anyone with the release, but the velocity is very high. For the first time in his career at the end of last season, it was his team, and he was outstanding.

I've always been a critic but his overall game is coming around, pretty respectable two-way play actually. With all the talent he's got, this poll could actually look pretty dumb in the future. I'd take Kesler at the moment though.

I wonder what would happen to Spezza and Kesler if they traded spots though.

People aren't saying Kesler took off his offensive hat, he just hadn't developed it at the NHL level yet. His offensive rise can be mainly attributed to two things, developing chemistry and his game with Burrows and playing with Sundin....improving his shot in the off season helped also.

Also when you said, it might not have been you not sure, said that Spezza was playing in the bottom 6. Well that is all well and good, but a decent amount if not half his points in his first couple of years had come by way of Alfie and or Hossa.

Not saying I'd take Kesler over Spezza though. If everything went right Spezza is the better player.
Before the lockout there was a fixed line of varada-bonk-hossa. Spezza was 4th line center in his first 2 years. A combination of bonk, white, fisher, and smolinski were ahead of him on the depth chart at the center position. Spezza was either out of the lineup, or 4th line his first year getting 21 points in 33 games. His second year he was a mainstain on the 4th line getting 22-33-55 in 82. He got PP time but he was mostly 4th line C. Come playoff time he was a healthy scratch because his defensive game wasn't up to JMs standards.

Everything being said, he was mainly used on the 4th line with pp time his first 2 years in the NHL. It's not until 5 years after being drafted(after the lockout) that they tried playing spezza with heatley, and bochenski to make a 1st/2nd line with alfredsson and havlat on the other. Bochenski failed, and alfredsson moved to the spezza line essentially making it the undisputed first line. Going into the season, we didn't know if the spezza-heatley line or the havlat-alfredsson line would be first.

^ I'm not saying I don't believe you its just that if you filter through the game scores you see.
You take the top 2 or 3 scoring players on the team and see how much of that players offence went through them. I did the same thing with Burrows to show before he "broke out" with the Sedin's he was scoring with other people and Kesler and how James Neal was usually playing with more quality.

I could only find game scores for 63 of Spezza's 76 points, but 33(or 52%) of those points were scored with either Alife, Hossa, or Havlat the top 3 scorers Spezza's first 2 years. Doesn't exactly sound like a 4th liner.

bump

Well spezza has been healthy for the first time in a long time and has had a very dominant season. Kesler is one of the best second line centers in the league but give me the top 10 center over a very good second line center 10 times out of 10.

Kesler had a career year, but I think he's a lot closer to a ~25 goal, ~60 point player than he is a ~40 goal, 75 point player.

Kesler is having a very bad season. If he gets back to form, I'll take Kesler. But this season, Spezza AINEC.

This board is such a joke. last year it was Kesler by a landslide. This year Spezza is playing to his full potential while Kesler just came off of a major hip injury and major hip surgery. Is anyone actually suprised?

1) Spezza's always been a PPG player
2) Spezza came off major injuries the past two years himself...
