The ratings in this game generally annoy me a lot, so I took the lines from the line combo thread and edited player overalls. I don't watch every game obviously, so I was wondering which ones I screwed up for your team. My system is a little different, and a bit more conservative than EA's.
97 - Generational talent (Crosby)
96 - Step below but still dominant player (Malkin)
94 - Superstar (Stamkos)
93 - Lesser superstar (Giroux)
92 - Franchise player (Spezza, Chara)
89-91 - Star (Sedins, Gaborik)
87-88 - All-star quality first-liner (Neal, Iginla)
85-86 - Great first-liner (Lecavalier, Michalek)
83-84 - Quality player, fits on first or second line (Glencross, Jokinen)
81-82 - Second or third-liner, solid but not anything special (Moen)
79-80 - OK player (Sullivan, Wolski)
78 - Mediocre low third/fourth line player (McCormick, Brule)
77 - AHL bait
74-76 - Poor player (Niederreiter, Boulton)
You call that conservative? I open up the file and see Jordan Caron as a 79... come on.
Moen 82 ? holy jesus
I'm sorry man but you fail. Those ratings are just as bad as EA's.
What we need to see anyway is the individual ratings, not the overall. But still, there's no way Moen's skillset adds up to 82 overall
Compared to EA that is conservative. Obviously it's not "everyone on the fourth line is a 60" conservative, but I don't hand out 80s as much as EA. In EA-land Trevor Daley is an 84, enforcers are 80s, and every bust is at least an 83.
I used the system above. Moen is a decent player, and in this game a decent player amounts to an 82. If he was a 77 or 78 or something then you'd see a pile of the in-game free agents being better than him, which just isn't true. BTW he is also an 82 in the default ratings.
Hawks wise, it's pretty good, I would drop Hjalmarsson to an 83, drop Leddy a few overall, raise Seabs an overall, Switch Morrison and Brunnettes overall and maybe raise Stalberg, but other than that pretty good.

I mean, there isn't enough difference between 2nd line scorers and grinders. Gionta is 84 and Moen 82? Are you serious? Have you ever seen them play?
Players that can hit, grind and fight are EVERYWHERE on this planet. Not just the NHL. There is no way a guy like Moen should be rated this high, period. He doesn't have any good skills.
If you put a guy like Moen on an SEL team I'm fairly certain he wouldn't be more than a 3rd liner. In the AHL he'd have trouble holding down a top-6 spot.
Now let's say your top SEL and AHL players are rated around 75/76, why would Moen be 82 ???
You need to be consistent throughout... a guy like Staubitz for exemple should never get more than a 73 or something because all he does is fight and skate. I could see a guy like Moen being a 76 whereas his skills barely translate to a top player in AHL or SEL which is pretty realistic if you ask me.
Iginla is a 86 and Moen is 82, do you seriously think there is enough difference between the two? Do you realize Iginla can do everything as good as Moen with his eyes closed?
Moen's hitting, defense and agression ratings should be fairly high but the rest should be fairly low... like in the 60's in order to recreate his usual 25 pts season in the NHL... he also is a pretty slow player for NHL standards
This works for season mode or exhibition, but sadly, it doesn't work with Be a GM. Trust me, I've tried it... and within a few years, a 85-87 overall player is a 2nd liner.
I base my overall ratings on +/- within the team and will often need to adjust the more subjective factors to align them as planned based on the somewhat wacky overall ratings formula from the archaic game I edit. shot accuracy I pull form shooting percentage 15+, 10-14.9, 5-9.9, 0.1-4.9, 0). likelihood to be penalized I pull from PIM (100+, 50-99, 25-49, 1-24, 0, all out of 82 games). passing, pass/shoot bias, checking, awarenesses are much more subjective. for stick handling, agility, shot power and speed I rely on skill competition results and the expertise of fans. this site has proven crucial to generating decent player ratings for the game I am constantly updating. the game turns twenty years old next year.
