Professional caddies are expected to be an encyclopedia of knowledge for the golf courses being played. Prior to the start of every tournament to be played, they spend days walking the course taking measurements from tee to green and from everything inbetween. They need to know the distance to every bunker, water hazard, out of bounds, minimum distance to reach the fairway etc. They analyze the way the course handles routine shots and shots that stray into trouble, how the ball will bounce when it hits the green and how it will roll through the rough.
On top of all this responsibility, they are their player's gametime psychologist. They help the player bring their round back into focus, bounce back from bad strokes, keep them confident, etc.
