CD Projekt Red will give away a "legendary" PC RPG for free on GOG.com this Thursday, 5th April, Eurogamer can reveal.
The giveaway coincides with CD Projekt's Spring Conference, which is being streamed live at 5pm GMT (presumably 6pm BST).
Note that giveaway has nothing to do with the "extraordinary" conference announcement CD Projekt has been teasing.
CD Projekt Red head of marketing Michal Platkow-Gilewski explained to Eurogamer: "No, there will be no announcement of a new game.
"But to give you some hints and not to spoil the surprise, CD Projekt RED and GOG.com have prepared something very special for all the PC fans of The Witcher 2 Assassins of Kings, who already have the game, as well as for all those who will buy one any time in the future.
"It is something really unique," he added.
"More to come on the conference."
A free copy of The Witcher 1? What has CD Projekt got up its deer-hide sleeve?
EDIT: This leaked footage and screenshots are from the Free Radical build of the game which was scrapped many years ago. The first three links are new sources of hope for the game.
So for about ten years, I've been looking for a graphics patch for Pharaoh, one of the best of Impressions' city building games.
Basically, you can set the graphics to 640x480, 800x600 or 1024x768. No widescreen, no allowances for modern resolutions. It's not stored in *.cfg or *.ini files either, but instead in the *.exe launcher file. So it required someone adept with hex editors.
He added 1280x960, 1600x1200, 1920x1440, 2048x1536, 1280x1024, 1280x720, 1360x768, 1600x900, 1920x1080, 2560x1440, 1280x800, 1440x900, 1680x1050, 1920x1200, 2560x1600 resolutions for both Pharaoh and its expansion, Cleopatra.
Apparently working on new *.exe files for Zeus and Emperor, too. Love it when gaming communities step up.
EDIT: I stand corrected. Zeus and Poseidon files are done too!
I must be out of the loop, because this is the first I've heard of it. But I'm intrigued.
Anyone got a quick synopsis of what to expect, both gameplay/feel-wise and quality-wise?
In short, it's a modern-day MMORPG, with a government conspiracy / Templar / Illuminati theme. Maybe a little like a Hellgaet London, except not sucky.
I know there are a number of Total War fans here. Here's a thought-provoking article on quick loading and expectations of victory in RTS/TBS and grognard gaming.

Articles at GameSpy have seemed to pick up since Dan Stapleton took over.
Good read.
I am pretty forgetful so when I get into a game I generally only remember about saving/loading after things have already gotten past the point of no return. I do agree that certain games tend to have overly severe consequences if you lose, which forces players into more of a save/load mindset.
I think the MMO playstyle might be one of the influences at work here. You can do whatever idiotic thing you wish and generally your character is fine again after the respawn timer runs down. I think people are looking for a similar situation in other types of games now too. I can remember the days of the original C&C and Civ titles and hardly saving at all. Then your NOD base gets hit with Orcas and you forgot to build missile silos and you start the whole thing over again.
Listen up. From noon on Friday, April 20 (Pacific) until 10:00am (Pacific) on Monday, April 23, Diablo III will be in open beta. Meaning anyone with a valid Battle.net account can get in on the action.
