I'm cool with bringing him back...but why would he get more than the minimum?
a few reasons
1. 15-9-4 a better than average record
2. career experience
3. league minimum goes to released goaltenders, losing record goalies or guys coming up from the AHL
4. He was at a league minimum this year because he came back from a hip surgery, and he had to earn a spot.
5. Emery is a netminder that has better than backup numbers and higher career percentages in the playoffs.
6. He didn't get the league minimum, because he easily out played his contract this year.
7. Offering Emery the league minimum would have allowed him to test UFA market.
8. I think you offer the league minimum to guys who have played in the NHL, but are down in the AHL looking for opportunities.
9. Emery deserved the contract.

I don't disagree with much of that. I just don't think anything could have stopped them from doing this over the summer. I don't see any other team giving him this money. In the meantime, we've now tied our hands and if a decent goalie hits the market and wants to play cheap for a contender...we have no room now.
Another reason to hate Bowman. He overpaid Emery considering the FA pool in the offseason. Why can't he get any discounts out of these guys? He's turning into our previous GM and giving them sweetheart deals!
I think re-signing Emery for $1.15M/1-year is OK. He can handle backup goalie and the main thing is that it helps provide roster stability which is something that has been in short supply over the last couple years.
The main problem the Hawks have had this season is not playing cohesively as a 5-man unit on the ice. Once they shored up the gaps between forwards and d-men and they started playing better as a team - the odd-man rushes and Chinese firedrills in the d-zone were reduced and the goaltending wasn't left out to dry nearly as often. I still believe Crawford and Emery will be fine if the team in front of them plays well.
The Hawks were a playoff team despite their goaltending, yet people keep blaming the team in front of them. Yes its everyone elses fault our goalies posted GAA over 2.7 had SV% under .903. Not their fault at all. Hasek is his prime couldn't do any better.

I disagree. If the Hawks wanted to upgrade in the goalie position they could trade Emery rather easily. Here is the point though... Stan only needs to make minor adjustments next year. This team can win a cup with Crawford in net. All that they need to do is be around .912% in saves.
When Stan gets Oduya signed then the defense is pretty much set. If Montador returns to the team in the playoffs then he will show the entire NHL that he bounced back from the concussion.
Will Montador be wearing a Blackhawk sweater next year? He could start on the long-term injured reserved list as a non rostered player. The other scenario would be if he played in the playoffs this year that he would be traded. There is a 50/50 chance that Montador will not be a cap hit to start the season.
Finding money to address free agent needs. I'm not saying all these guys are gone, but a few of them will be. Right now we are sitting on 3,88,460 million in cap space.
Subtract some of this fat and we could be sitting at double digits under the cap.
1,250,000 Morrison
2,000,000 Brunette
2,750,000 Montador
850,000 0'Donnell
750,000 Lepisto
550,000 Mayers

8.15 = roster space
+ 3.88 under the cap this year
The Hawks will have plenty of room to get 1 major player and a goalie if a goalie slipped into their lap ala T. Vokoun.
Good move. Emery was solid in most of his starts, he kept the team going when Crawford's confidence was shot and he's part of the reason we are where we are. Our goalies might not have been the best this year but then again our defense was absent at several points during the season contributing to those poor numbers.
Glad to see Emery has a home, he really has done well after the hip surgery, far better than when he was with Ottawa. He's also one of the few on the team that can stand for himself and his teammates when needed.
He's gonna go ballistic if CC falters against Coyotes and Emery ends up in there. That said CC looked strong, really strong for 2 periods yesterday. Hopefully a good sign.
He was also injured when they signed Turco. Rask and him both were, which is why they didn't bring him up, and went and signed Turco.
so instead of the garbage that we know (Emery), you want to trade for someone else's unknown garbage?? not seeing the logic or how that helps us.
I dont see the big deal with this signing money wise...it isnt really that bad, and his rear end can be dumped if he blows it..
The only real problem I have is not trying to at least snag one of the better potential free agent goalies out there...I mean its not like we have to beg free agents to sign with us...especially the local kid Montoya who would probably sign for free to get out of Long Island..
maybe we are all looking at this wrong..
Emery was signed to be our back up, but maybe not to back up CC??? nah.....
