Savard named Senior VP? (Savard denies rumor)

http://www.rds.ca/canadien/chroniques/338264.html

Quote:

Absolutely disgusting. The guy is so out of touch, hasn't been close to the game since forever.

**** this move.

Not good news given his statements since being brought aboard to conduct the GM search.

do you know how he's been spending his time the past few years?

do you even know what a Senior V.P's responsibilities are?

Just because he hasn't been working directly in an NHL position doesn't mean he isn't qualified, or more than qualified, to be a VP of a hockey team.

I'm liking Molson less and less. We'll see how this plays out I guess.

Potentially bad, potentially beneficial. I'll give it time to see whether it really affects this club in a big way. I just want him to do a good job and make the best choice in every situation.

One thing that is encouraging is that experienced ex-hockey players, like Chris Nilan, and well known analysts, like Bob McKenzie and Pierre McGuire, all really like this move. I'm not going to pretend I know what to expect, and choose to get upset before seeing how we move forward... but it is encouraging to see that prominent hockey personalities like this move.

Well, this is interesting. It'll all depend on how much say he has, and I can't see Savard NOT having a lot to say, or wanting power. We could end up with a puppet GM here. That would suck.

Mmmh... Savard is now a businessman, and he's been in the Hockey business for a long time.

That Molson wants a buffer between the 2 worlds to act as a "bridge", so to speak, between Molson and the new GM is actually good. He's probably going to have responsibilities that are akin to what Pierre Boivin had.

I don't see this being bad, unless he starts deciding on hockey stuff instead of the GM.

For Christ sakes people, do any of you even know the point of this role? What if his position is simply to take care of the finances or liaise, as long as he's not a part of the actual hockey decisions when it comes to players what does it matter.

Sincerely a graduate level business student

Does Senior VP have anything to do with what our team would look like on ice?

He will be the new GM's boss.

And he's been out of hockey for over a decade. This doesn't look good.

He's the boss of the GM. So in a way, yes.

But does that mean that he has veto on the GM's moves? I hope not, because in his recent interviews, he always said no french players = no good.

There are several people with the same title in the league .. Dave Nonis in Toronto comes to mind ...

Normally from what I understand the person works closely with the General Manager in terms of the general direction of all hockey matters in the club, but is not making day to day decisions.

Seems to me it is just a buffer between Molson and the GM so that Molson doesn't have to be involved day to day.

Hate this move, I can't stand bringing back these old dinosaurs the game has changed since the lockout. This is a chance for a fresh start. I guess we now know the gm will be french

I don't really see the upside, but I sure can see a downside.

With the statements Savard made, and the position he will now occupy, he could very well "force" his GM to bring more Quebec born and french speaking players on this team, even if they might not be the best option available. I'd be happy to have more of those players if they are still good and a right fit. But I gotta admit that I am a bit nervous to see Savard become our next GM boss. And also, it might not appeal to some candidates to have another guy above them besides the owner, and even less if you had that the guy is an ex GM who might want to have final say over the moves made.

I don't like that.

I was thinking the same thing. But we'll see how this plays out. I would also like the habs to start moving away from ex-habs.

I think he really meant more about picking more prospects in the Q (underrated league), so it's not absolutely Quebec players. Grigorenko will do the trick

This is the most overused and inappropriately used word on this board. Case in point.

Savard might be an exhab but he did manage the team for 12 years.
Experience can go along way.
