I think many are jumping the gun here.

I have been saying for a week or two that this team needs to name a senior VP. Someone who can watch all aspects of the team. Most successful teams have these guys such as Bobby Clarke, Jim Devellano, Harry Sinden, etc. Many of the guys who do this job aren't even ex-players. They are business people. They focus a lot more on the financial success of the team than the on-ice product.

As far as on-ice product, these guys are more of a second set of eyes to make sure the GM isn't going crazy. Making sure they have a plan and are sticking to it. Something that was obviously lacking here in the past.

I was hoping that someone like Ken Dryden would get hired for this position but Serge Savard could work out. I really don't know how business savvy these guys are so I will trust Molson's judgement.

Edit: found a previous post where I suggested this: http://hfboards.hockeysfuture.com/sh...=#post47339183

I don't know why some of you have your panties in a bunch. Savard put together teams with a solid combination of speed, skill size and toughness. His philosophy hasn't changed, at least there isn't a reason to believe it has.

Do we know what his specific duties are, yet?

What GM on Earth doesn't want speed, skill size and thoughness ?

With a senior advisor coming in does this mean that they are thinking about hiring a rookie gm..

just a question

There is a fine line between "wanting" and actually assembling one.

Savard's way too smart for that, and Molson's way too smart to hire him if that was the case.

Take this at face value. Savard is an intelligent hockey mind who brings winning standards and that important local link. In fact, with Savard there to fill the fans' need for a local link, the organization can hire anyone of any language.

As to running the team, no GM would take the job if he became a puppet to Savard.

I don't really care one way or another for this posting. It's good that Molson is appointing people around him in the high-management sphere who know about hockey.

We'll see who they appoint GM and Coach. THEN I'll make a judgment call. But I am happy that Savard won't just pick the next leader and get out without facing the consequences of his decision.

I am not sure what bad comes out of this.. If anything, Savard will know how to compete with Quebec for the attention of fans.
Agree with both of you. As for Young Gun:

Not necessarily ..

It just means Savard will be involved day to day so Molson does not have to. It means Molson clearly trusts Savard to maintain the team heading in the right direction and make sure things get done properly.

Someone wrote in the other thread that the GM would need to report to Savard and Savard would report to Molson.

The internet did not exist when Savard was "assembling" it.

Well actually I guess it existed in US military bases.

Most of us here are against this move but there will be those who will defend it. Serge Savard had his time with the Habs and had some success then things went bad and he got fired. I am asking, why bring him back? It is the same old recycling that always happens, he is there to basically be a watchdog over the new GM. This is not a good move and leaves me to wonder why they dont just call him the new general manager and have it over, because he will definitely have his say in everything.

I never saw the last two disasters bring in any of those holes we were missing for years. Neither of them saw it as a problem.

The last sucessful GM Montreal had, won 2 cups and had a stellar career with the team as a multiple stanley cup winning player assuming formal responsibility for hiring the next GM......and the problem is???????

Any chance we trade Pleks + Kaberle + 1st round 2012 for Lecavalier, MAB and Gervais?

you guys are hilarious.

The GM will still make decisions. You have ZERO respect for a guy that won many cups with this team as much as a player than a GM.

Its first developers thought it would be a place where educated people would exchange on science, philosophy and dramatically speed up human progress. Then along came HFBoards.

I hear the Leafs are in needs of new fans. As a huge bonus they don't draft any French speaking players ... so they only have the good players.

Absolutely disgusting. The guy is so out of touch, hasn't been close to the game since forever.

**** this move.
How do you know he is out of touch? I would bet on him rather than bet on your comment above......

I don't know why some of you are so angry about this move, honestly i love it. I knew from the start Serge was going to be vp long after the gm search. Hes a good hockey mind, he can add some really valuable input to the new gm. The only problem I have is that I thought IF Pierre Mcguire would be hired he would bring Scotty in as VP. But im totally fine with this move.

I think this means Roy is coming for sure. Knowing that Roy wants a greater voice in the process, the addition of Savard as SVP Hockey Operations will ensure that the coach and GM will both have a voice.

I think a rookie gm and rookie coach is likely.....Brisebois as GM with Roy as coach......
