These NFL deals are pretty funny. I don't know exactly how the cap hits would work out over the course of the deal, but this is really a 3 or 4 year deal. After that, his cap hit will start escalating and they'll have to restructure (or cut him if he has some kind of catastrophic injury or personal issues).
Think of it this way - the deal averages $16.5 mil a year. If the cap hit the first year is $12 mil, well, those $4.5 mil have to hit the cap some time. Like I said, I don't know all the specifics of the deal but the back half of this contract has got to have cap hits in the $25-30 mil range. That's just not going to work. They'll restructure it after 3 or 4 years - that's how these deals work.
Or he'll pull a Barry and just retire next year, a year after signing the biggest contact in NFL history.
After Fielder in the #4 spot, Avila's the best hitter left and he's hitting...8th. I know the hope is that Raburn/Young/Peralta will get on for Avila to drive them in, but I think we're going to see a lot of Avila standing on second, with two outs and Santiago/Jackson leaving him there.

I dunno, Avilas a good bat but Peralta is a good bat, so is Delmon. Definitely comparable to Avila anyways, Raburn can mash em too. He had a pretty hot spring, hopefully he can bat for the first 3 months of the season though.
Really liking Jackson's new stance. He was late on pitches a ton last season, now that he got the leg kick out of there he seems to be connecting on more pitches.
Peralta and Jackson were really good today but it was against a lefty for as good as Lester was. I'd like to see a day like this against a right hander.
Avila goes deep and the Tigers lead 5-0 bottom of the 4th! Three HR's already. Fielder and Cabrera being the other two to hit a homer. I really hope it will be a good season to be a Tigers fan.
EDIT: 7-0 bottom of the 5th, Cabrera and Fielder hit back-to-back HR's. Awesome. Cabrera's one was under review for a while, it was a strange situation really. Beckett out for the day, Atchinson comes in.

Thanks man!
This season is looking to be quite the enjoyable one. That's good, 'cause I'm at my whit's end with the Wings.
What a game it's been so far, after 7th it's 10-0 for the Tigers. Pretty close to being a perfect game, especially Cabrera and Fielder have been on fire. Cabrera's been a great batter (as always) and he's also made a couple of beautiful catches. Can't really complain about the pitchers, either.
The Tigers have been really really good, but the Red Sox've been pretty awful (partly as a result though). A great start for the season, the World Series title is ours.
Okay, now I really need to find a way to order MLB Extra Innings. It was hard enough last summer having to go out to watch them (which I can't do that often anyway; I'm not in the business of dropping all of money in a bar 162 nights a year), and nothing beats the comfort of sports at home.
This team is not one to be missed. They are looking good so far (at least the hitting, anyway ).
I think everybody knew that he was going to hit one when he walked up to the plate. You could just sense it. He's the best hitter on the planet IMO.
You could make a strong case that the two best players in the game play for Detroit. Cabby and JV are scary good.
BTW, how awesome would have that been if Prince went back-to-back there? Place would have went absolutely nuts.
I dont think you need to qualify that with an IMO. I dont see how anyone could be argued as a better batter than Cabrera. His average, power, and his average when he has runners in scoring position is unmatched. Not to mention his base running ability when he gets on is unreal for a big guy.

I really think hes the best player in baseball.
Me too. And i really think he's going to go down as one of the greatest players of all time. He's that good. I remember watching his postseason run as a 20yr old with Florida and just thinking to myself "this kid is an absolute stud." And he's only built off that. He's putting up numbers that only a handful of players at the same age have. What a brilliant trade that ended up being, regardless of Willis.
BTW, one of my favorite moments from today's game was Cabrera's reaction to Fielder getting a single in the 11th. Everybody and their mother knows that Prince could end it with one swing, but he showed maturation by taking what he was given and hitting the ball to the opposite field (much like Cabby does with 2 strikes). When Cabrera got to 2nd he looked back at Prince and gave him a big clap or something like to show his appreciation. I think this team knows that they have the weapons offensively to play a smart game and still succeed in heroic fashion.
In other baseball related news, the Cuban defector that the Tigers had some interest in during the offseason is off to a nice start. Cespedes has gone deep 3 straight games now. It'll be interesting to see if he was worth the hype. He's already definitely shown that he has MLB power, we'll just have to see if he can hit for average as well. I watched his first dinger and it was an absolute bomb. I think they estimated that it was over 460 ft.

Have they started throwing him curveballs yet? That's what I'm waiting for - Maybin homered off of Roger Clemens before they realized he couldn't hit a curve. When they start throwing him nothing but curves in the dirt, will he be willing to take a walk? Will he be able to pick them up and hold up his swing? We'll see. Good start for the guy though.
Oh, and we're up 5-2 in the bottom of the 8th after a solid game from Porcello.
That young pitcher for the rays had the tigers number, as soon as he went out the flood gates opened, including a Laird RBI.
Cabrera hurt his wrist, then puts one off the wall a couple pitches later. Had he not hurt his wrist it woulda been outta the park. This tigers team looks very legit so far this season
