As it's been said before, Ottawa has a real problem when teams clog up the neutral zone. The Rangers do tend to trap when they can muster up an early lead. So if they can score a couple of goals first, and play physically, that could be the key to the series.
The Rangers seldom "trap" in the sense that we sit back and wait for mistakes.
The Rangers this season are built on a very aggressive forecheck, and that is the exact opposite of what true "trap" teams do. The notion that the Rangers are a "trap" team is silly. If playing good defense once you're in your own zone means that you're trapping, then practically every Stanley Cup winner in recent memory is guilty of playing a "trap" system.

+1000 we gotta stay out of the box. i don't think they can hang with us 5 on 5 but giving them a bunch of pp chances will mean trouble
i think another huge key will be our pp...in too many games we've had a bad habit of letting teams hang around and the sens are a team that can score quickly. we need to cash in our chances early and get a lead to avoid the scenario where we are dominating and then one bad change and bang its in the net.

We don't have an aggressive forecheck when we're up by 2, we definitely have a tendency to clog the neutral zone. Hell, we even sometimes trap when we're down big. I was at the game on Saturday and by the time it was 3-0, the Rangers were undeniably trapping.
Not that it's a bad thing. We don't do it every game, Torts is fairly selective with it.

Seems like that's how they've had success against us this season.
So you're saying that the Sens have been saving it for the playoffs? wouldn't it have been easier to block and hit your way to the 6th spot, so you could face the Panthers? Rangers have been playing with playoff intensity for mostly the entire season. Torts will have them ready to play.
(It's nice that we can have civilized conversations with you guys. It's impossible to do so with Penguins fans, who have been running their mouths a lot lately.)
Quote:
The Senators are dismissing the fact they lost the last three games of the regular season, saying they simply took their foot off the pedal after winning four straight to clinch a playoff spot.
“Right now, we’ve got a fresh slate,” said Anderson. “What happened in the past, these last three games, the last 82, is behind us. We have a fresh start, starting (this) week. Everyone starts at zero wins and zero losses. That’s our mindset, that we’ve got to win four before the other team wins four.”
I just made a wallpaper if anyone wants to use it:

Aside from Cowen and Phillips, you have a point. You are right, as the highest scoring defence in the ;eague, if I am not mistaken, they move the puck very well and perhaps responsible for the team being in the playoffs in the 1st place.
I think that in the East, all the teams have their strong points. While I think the Rangers are good, I have not believed in them all year and they have proven me wrong finishing where they have. I am still not feeling that they are unbeatable, I think myself and many Sens fans like the way we have played the Rangers. THat is what gives us hope and, ultimately, concerns Ranger fans.
The Rangers aren't unbeatable. I don't suscribe to the fact that they are a stanley cup team just yet(they are close). I personally believe they have overachieved this year. With that said, I think the Rangers are still getting to the ECF.

The Rangers aren't a trap team(almost to a fault).
But they better damn well start getting comfortable doing it against the Sens. An over aggressive forecheck is not how they will beat the Sens.
If the Rangers get overzealous they will be in serious trouble.
If they are patient, they will run away with the series.
Championship teams adjust to their opponents. If the Rangers wish to be stubborn in their playing style, they won't win jack.

Looking forward to this series. It's nice to play a series against a new opponent instead of the same old teams in the playoffs.
I think it will be a great series to watch with the Rangers forechecking and the Senators not afraid to push the D up into the offensive zone, it shouldn't be a sit back and wait for mistakes style from either side.

Sadly, I think thats exactly what it is going to be. Both teams playing in the neutral zone for most the series.
I really doubt the Rangers are going to be playing "straight ahead".

Why would the Rangers get away from their forecheck? The best D for the Sens is to move the puck quick, and get it into the Rangers end. I have not illusion that we have stellar overall D to contain good forechecking and a strong cycle. It's adequate but vulnerable to strong play down low.
You really think the rangers are gonna score 6 in a game twice in the series? This isn't 2011
Expect a lot of 3-1, 3-2 games. I can see Ottawa winning game 1 and sending this board into panic mode. Then the rangers will follow up with a 3-1 game 2 win, and order will be temporarily restored.
After that, Im not sure yet. We will see a minimum of 6 games.
