The Chicago Blackhawks have agreed to terms with Ray Emery on a one-year extension.
Maybe Bowman anticipated a Vokoun/Harding to get $3.5 plus next year?
...
And that Vokoun and Harding are more likely headed to NJD and EDM respectively as UFAs.
RFAs Schneider and Lindback are both property of key conference rivals; so its unlikely CHI would have been able to acquire them. They'll likely go teams that will have a harder time attracting UFAs (for instance, CBJ & TBL).
That leaves the trade market. Khabibulin? Thomas? Steve Mason? All big cap hits.
The smaller cap hit of Bernier is obviously appealing, but he'll cost too much to acquire.
At that point, perhaps it becomes a matter of sticking with the devil you know.

Of course this signing does not prevent the 'Hawks from trying to upgrade their goaltending. If they get an upgrade then one of the existing goalies goes on waivers if they are not otherwise traded.

While it doesn't prevent it, it still show Chicago's intention.
If you was planning to acquire a goalie in the off season, would you resign Emery now ?
You dont sign a guy with the intention to waive him.

It shows that Chicago is adopting a sensible hedge with their goaltenders. You never want to leave yourself in a position to be scrambling for goalies by having only one NHLer under contract.
Yet if a Harding wants to sign in Chicago or a deal could be worked out for a Kiprusoff, you don't kill the deal because you have Ray Emery under contract for one year at $1.15 million. You trade a goalie or put one on waivers.
The 'Hawks have a salary tolerance higher than the salary cap. They have shown a willingness to pay guys to not play in the NHL (Huet and Olesz) and Huet is off the books after this season.
The worst case scenario for the 'Hawks is Crawford-Emery rather than Crawford - ???. They are in no way impaired from upgrading further.
Rather signed Montoya (hometown boy) or get Vokoun

And we still don't know what will happen with the cap number for next season. You'd have to think that at some point the number has to stall or fall after 3 years with the economy in the crapper.
Hawks are good, get more youth that will bring some quality and have more than enough Cap Space
I had a damn good laugh when I saw this on NHL Network. Emery is garbage and the Hawks will regret this signing. Could've had Harding or Vokoun instead.
