What Might Have Been-Luongo Even Up For Joe Thornton

Evidently Keenan had a deal in place that would have sent Joe Thornton to the Panthers for Luongo but Panther Ownership nixed it because of Thornton's contract.
‏ @JeffMarek

On our Sportsnet Playoff Preview show Mike Keenan just talked about being offered Joe Thornton for Roberto Luongo. 1 for 1.
‏ @JeffMarek

Kennan wanted to make the deal but ownership didn't want to take on the Thornton contract.

Ancient History but interesting.

I would have been perfectly content not knowing about this for the rest of my life.

Thank you.

Better than Bertuzzi and Auld lol.

Yikes, cheap management, too bad we had too many frugal people afraid to spend any money on the team in charge. Cheap cheap cheap and just looking to minimize losses and make whatever possible. Getting a winning team on the ice would have more than covered the losses and this could have been a step.

our years of mediocrity circled around 3 key things:

1. Terrible Management

2. Terrible Scouting

3. Terrible Ownership

I am not surprised at all by this news. I would hope cliff viner has more pride in this franchise to show a commitment to bring a stanley cup to south florida.

I realized that this was in the past, so at this point with the team on a very high note, I'm just not going to analyze any of my brain cells towards it.

Who's to say Thornton would have stuck with us this long anyway? We wound up with Matthias out of this too. Ehh trade was terrible, but hey we're in the playoffs atm. Now's a good a time as any to hear these...

If it took losing Luongo to get rid of Keenan, it was well worth it.

Yeah, I would have been happy with that.

Well someone just talked in another thread about how easy it would be to be an expert and make predictions worth squat on tv. In my opinion info like this is excactly why I like to see experts on shows. Inside info that's never been published before, and very interesting too. Not too often you get these so thanks for that Keenan. It does put some things in perspective, at least to me. GM's are sometimes, maybe more often than we think, handcuffed by management, and may take heat for what seem poor decisions because of that.

But enough of history. Today we're in. Finally. That's all that matters.

To be honest, it is quite easy to pull a prediction right out of your ass which these experts often do.
I never really said anything about them knowing inside stuff since that wasn't what I was talking about lol.

Thornton would've been pretty sweet to have but there's no point in being angry about it now, better times are coming!

Given the time this trade would have occurred, that might have been the biggest GM blunder of the century. Then again, I'm sure there was hope Loungo would stay in Florida because I'm assuming Thornton was still in Boston. The Joe Thornton of 06 could have made the John Madden of today a 50 goal scorer.
