Mike Keenan just said so on Sportsnet's Playoff Preview show.

Pretty interesting that FLA management said no (especially considering Thornton ended up with 125 points that year after his trade to SJ), and opted for Bertuzzi + Auld instead...

Bertuzzi had 70+ points the season before that trade, people like to tie his fall to the Moore incident but it's his back problems that slowed his career. The guy started off with 7 points in 7 games for the Panthers before missing almost the rest of the season with the back injury.

So the Panthers took a deal of a 1st line power forward, a top 4 defenseman and a younger goalie with potential, I know people like to knock quantity for quality deals, but they have their place when trying to plug several holes in a lineup.

Even so, I'd still much rather have the top line center.

Allen back then is like Luke Schenn is now. That might leave you with the same comment, but at the very least one can gamble on the upside.

Thank god you got Marco Sturm? It's not like you would've signed Lu to a 12-year deal.

Yes... see how I mentioned Marco Sturm in my post... oh wait.

No, thank god we didn't get Roberto Luongo. That would have completely changed the direction of the team, and with Boston winning the Stanley Cup within 6 seasons of making said trade its hard to imagine acquiring Luongo would have had a more desirable effect.

For instance, and this looking at it as simply as possible, if Boston trades for Luongo, Tim Thomas doesn't get his shot, and if Vancouver doesn't acquire Luongo, Timmy never gets his tires pumped properly in last years finals.

Again, thank god we dodged that bullet.

If I remember correctly, this was talked about on these very boards by Kevin Paul Dupont and it was suggested that Weiss was also part of the deal.

I am glad it didn't happen because I have a feeling the Bruins would be a much different team than what they have been for the last couple of years.

Luongo to Boston? Wow! I like Luongo, know his brother and like the Canucks but if he was a Bruin, I would of hated him.

And as for Thornton, I think he's a great regular season player and it will remain that way.

As a Canucks fan I still can't help, but laugh at that.

I said this in the thread on the main board, I don't blame Boston fans for not wanting Luo as the Thorton trade lead to the team they have now who just won the cup. But don't act like Luo is a bad goalie because he is not.

Hindsight is always 20/20. At the time, it wasn't horrible. Although you can definitely argue that they could've gotten more.

It could've ended up better as well. Who knows. Although you're right, no complaints, a cup was won, rather not think about the IFs that may lead a different path.

No. His final year with Vancouver was not great, he had clearly lost a step. He was no longer in his prime and the Sedins had kinda taken over in Vancouver. I think he put up OK numbers that year, but it was a different story to watch him play. He certainly was not considered a 1st liner anymore.

As I recall that is what Keened wanted from the BBS and it was turned down
