Malkin wins Kharlamov Trophy as NHL's best Russian...

Out of the 24 Russians that voted, only 4 picked Datsyuk over Malkin. (And 1 of them was Malkin himself.)

The 3 that picked Datsyuk were Bobrovsky, Nikolai Kulemin, and Anton Khudobin. (3rd stringer from Boston.)

Just ask around the main boards, some will tell you that Datsyuk is the clearcut best in the league without question

should have been 23-1 (Malkin voting for Datsyuk is part of what makes me love him, what a goof). this should put a kibosh on the frequently proposed Kulemin-Malkin-Neal line

And the article said Malkin was one of the votes.

He didn't even have more PPG than Neal... I'm not saying Neal and Datsyuk are in the same category, but come on...

Isn't the reason he chose #71 because of Kharlamov? Gotta be an important award for him. Hopefully, the Hart and Lindsay are next.

Geno wanted #11 when he first got here, but Staal already had 11. So Geno took #71.

That's his son.

Named after Valeri Kharlamov. He was one of the greatest players ever to play the sport. He's on the level of Gretzky, Mario, etc. He won 11 Gold Medals for the USSR.

He died tragically in a car accident. His number is retired by the Russian National team so that's why Kovalchuk wears 71 for Russia and not his usual 17.

Yes. Kovalchoo, as well. Amongst other Russian players, past and present. Malkin wears it reversed.

Nice recognition for Evgeni, now it's time to grab that second Conn Smythe.

Traditionally, the best players in Russia get the right to wear 71 in honor of Kharlamov. It's not a hard and fast rule or anything, but it's a neat little sidenote to one of the game's greats, I think.

would be cool if whoever is the holder of the Kharlamov trophy actually got to where 71 in the tournaments for that year.

That's very interesting. Every year I tell myself that I need to find a way to watch at least one KHL game, but the thought gets overshadowed by NHL games.

Geno seems to be everyone's friend. He & Khudobin go back too.

I think it is neat how 17 is retired for the men's teams, but not the jr teams. It is like teaching team and making them realize what an honor it is.

Also, am I reading that right? Did Datsyuk pick Semin 3rd?

that's hilarious. Semin received one total vote, and it was that vote. granted he had a pretty strong second half of the season.

I'm being partially facetious. I also think Datsyuk is easily one of the best and has some of the greatest skill, but overall I don't feel he's the best.
