I wouldn't do it as a Caps fan. I'd rather trade each 1st for a player separately. If you trade 2 first round picks in one deal, you should be getting back an elite player.
I'm not opposed to Plekanec, but I'd prefer a package involving one of the firsts, Perreault, and another roster player or prospect.

So we're dropping the 2 second rounders in this one right?
The same reason you want 1st round picks. To draft a player that you can develop into an NHLer down the road. But hey, if you don't want 2nd round picks you can give your next 10 to the Canucks. We won't complain

The point is that if we're going "all in" trying to win now instead of using those 1st, why would we be interested in paying extra for more 2nds? If we're at the point where we no longer care about the draft, why would we want to essentially trade down? If the options are a 1st and 2nd for Plekanec or both 1sts for Plekanec and two 2nds, there's no incentive for the Caps to chose the latter.

Essentially this becomes a "K, we'll give you a 1st and a 2nd, and you take your 2nds and our 2nd and get your own 1st with somebody else?"

Sounds good. The Caps' prospect pool is so barren, going two straight years without a first round pick would be brutal. It'd take a great deal for me to justify mortgaging our future like that.
Markov is a great player, when he's healthy, which is four years in the past.
Thirteen, 7, and 45 games played in the last three seasons make that a contract no one will touch.
Plekanec? Good player. Personally, I don't think the Canadiens have the centers to replace Plekanec, and that he's not actually on the market. At least, that's what the GM will conclude when Montreal has one.
