Maybe there was more than what I read, but why are they making this such a huge deal - his job on the line even? OK, he said he respected Castro because he's still alive despite everyone wanting to kill him. I think America is way, way, way too sensitive.
Agreed. One of the last true sources for unintentional comedy are sports interviews and the constant ramifications and fallout from what's said will do nothing but make players and managers more guarded with their words and take that away.
Guillen's comment is sure to alienate the fan base to a certain extent. The team had to do something about it.
Note to Guillen: Next time try to engage your brain before opening your mouth.
Ozzie's brain and his mouth have never met.
The guy is a Grade A moron, but he's funny to watch because he's got no filter. It was only a matter of time before he said something really offensive.
Ozzie has said some controversial things over the years. If this was just a one time thing I'd give him the benefit of the doubt, but no. This is nothing new. Between the Hugo Chavez comment to this, this guy is an idiot.
You might not understand the severerity of the issue if you're not Cuban, or that educated on the topic. But like the poster above said it literally is like being a manager of all things Jewish, sitting down and saying, "Yep! Adolph and I we understand eachother! I respect him for all his power! Murders? Sure! Dictating people's lives? My idol! Etc etc"
Its a slap in the face to Cuban Americans. And he should know better. This is really what he thinks and that community has every right to be up in arms.
I've seen some print media say this, but this is far from true. It's insulting to anyone whose family had dealings with Hitler.
I am astounded that Ozzie Guillen is in trouble for his comments. He said he loves and respects Castro. It's not the craziest thing in the World to say at all. I've lived in South Florida and I've visited Cuba. Castro is a polarizing political figure, but Hitler? Not even close. I can't believe how far this has gone with the United States' obsession to isolate Cuba that now a baseball manager can't speak his mind, voice a dissenting opinion, without being fined and villainized.

Someone needs to read a history book.
I'm missing a lot of info here but this is just a glimpse (some might be wrong so I apologize)
It is a very big deal especially in Miami.
Miami is home base for those who left Cuba when Castro came to power.
Castro is a Communist which is a red flag all by itself.
Long story short, Castro is an evil man who preyed upon innocent people and turned a once prosperous country upside down and ruined a lot of people and family's lives.
Those fleeing came north 90 miles and settled in Miami.
Hence why there is a long standing embargo between the US and Cuba and why being Pro-Castro isn't taken lightly.
Ozzie should know better than to say what he did.

You clearly don't understand the severeity of the issue. As someone who has had family who dealt with concentration camps, and are aware of Castro's hold of Cuba, its nor insulting to us. Its a justifiable comparence. You should do more research to get why people are mad.

you're not cuban. i live in florida and know and work with a lot of cubans who fled cuba and sought to become citizens here because of castro and will not return until he's dead. to you, a non-cuban, the comparison doesn't make sense. to people who have lived through castro's reign in cuba, it's insulting to say "i respect him" even if his line after about castro surviving assassination attempts is valid. i don't even live in miami and i can tell you that cubans here are hot about it. he's the one person they do not respect or feel deserves respect. he's been a pretty brutal dictator and treated his own people like ****. to say that you "respect him" because he's survived as long as he has is irresponsible.
i didn't compare him to hitler either. i said "to cuban americans, castro is basically hitler" which is true.

yup, just another day in paradise....
"Punt de Vista is reporting that the Castro regime has announced charges of "Disorderly Conduct" will be brought against Andres Carrion, the courageous protestor who yelled out "Down with Communism!" during a papal mass in Santiago de Cuba. While the charge itself does not appear extreme, keep in mind that Cuba is one of the few places in the world where such a minor charge carries with it a vicious beating, a violent arrest, weeks of imprisonment before charges are filed, and complete isolation from family, friends, countrymen, and the world. "
Still not in the realm of Hitler, so you can stop the history lessons and condescending lectures to anyone who doesn't agree.
The United States has befriended worse tyrants in the past.
We talk about how this country is so great because we have so much more freedom in the same context of a person being suspended for speaking his mind.
