Telling goaltending stat

I just looked and the Hawks are tied for 8th in the league allowing only 28.4 shots per game this year but were 22nd in goals against giving up 2.82. For reference last year the Hawks were 12th in goals allowed (2.68) while being tied for 6th in shots allowed (28.7). Just an awful year for Crawford. Makes you wonder where the Hawks end up in the standings with goaltending that was just as good as last year.

After the Wings scored in the game, the season lost pretty much all meaning for me, being a goaltender, except if they win the Cup.

Oh, what could have been.

Crawford is playing his best hockey right now. Good on him for getting things together in time for the playoffs.

And to actually shed some light on the discussion, Emery faced about 2 shots less a game and had the higher GAA. But that tells us nothing, we already knew Emery sucked and that Crawford was only on his game pretty much the first and last months.

Crawford should have played well enough to keep Emery out of games. That's on him...

Shouldnt your back up typically have a higher GAA? I mean, thats why he is the back up.

Crawford underperformed, Emery performed like he should.

if crawford had been the backup and we had a good starter it probably woulda changed a lot.

And I was one of the bigger crawford apologists. Hopefully, he steps up in the playoffs and rolls it into a good year next season

I'm the last guy to defend Crawford. But I'd have to ask in regards to this stat - where do the Hawks fall for giving up breakaways or odd man rushes? Because it seemed for a while that that problem was out of control - and if that is the case your goaltenders most certainly will have lower save %'s.

Nah Emery did fine for a backup making the league minimum.

That's not a telling goaltending stat.. at all. You could give up 10 shots a game.. if they're all breakaways, it's not surprising that the other team would score 3-4 goals.

The Hawks gave up far too many quality chances for long stretches during the year.
