I also hope you understand that he is not going to sit on his hands and do nothing.
Not in the beginning with the big splash that won't ever happen and not at the end when he has the old retreads to pick from. In between, when the real meat is available, guys who can help but will cost money, his palms might get sweaty. True, he won't sit on his hands when the Chipotle arrives.
2013, when Wang needs his Yashin splash for the Nassau pols and fan sentiment, he will do some significant signings. But until then, it's the same old story - lame oldies, young gambles and lotsa nothing with trades. I hope a draft pick does well and we can snag the next Moulson or Parenteau, but on defense. I doubt it will happen, but it's the only way it will.
The team doesn't need a roster shakeup. Snow is correct at that much.
It does need several holes filled, and likely, that won't happen this summer either. But nothing in this article implies that Snow won't at least attempt to fill those holes. He has to add some salary anyway just to reach the cap, so he will try to do it with players that aren't terrible. Likely though, he will strike out in UFA again and have to resort to less attractiive means of adding the needed salary.
But all this article is really saying is, don't expect a firesale.

How can anyone who has watched the Islanders this season and the past five say they do not need a roster shakeup? Just look at the Flyers a team that went to the cup two season ago blow up the roster last off season and finish 5th this year. GMs other than Snow have the balls to pull a trigger on a deal. Snow has not made an impact trade since the Smyth deal five years ago. We have had the same core for 2-3 years now and they have proved year after year that they can not get it done. Major change is needed.
This team has alot more than a few holes to fill. Maybe if we get lucky and fill just a few holes we can squeak into 8th and get destroyed in the first round like the Tampa and Ottawa series. If we want to be a competitive team the roster needs to be blown up. I am not saying "Milbury" the team, I am saying do something. Prospects/young players can be traded for each other and it happens all the time in this league. Snow is a terrible GM, he is handcuffed by Wang but even when Snow has money to burn he flushes it down the toilet anyway.
Edit: I do not mean to direct this at you, I am just beyond frustrated with Snow/Wang. Saying no changes just proves he is delusional about the talent on this team or he is just so dumb he thinks a regular season win over the Pens, Flyers, or Wings means something when the building goes dark every April and May.

Celebrating NOT trading prospects is like being on the Titanic and celebrating a nice cruising speed.
it is good news. the LAST THING that we need, is for him to Milbury the team.
everyone is frustrated, but i'd rather they stick to the rebuild plan, than take a short cut over a cliff, and find that they are at the start, AGAIN. going over a cliff, whether it's slowly, at cruising speed, or quickly, has no effect on the end result.
it's not a matter of NOT trading. it's a matter of making smart trades. if smart trades cannot be made, then the SMART thing is to NOT trade.

We all agree the "smart" trade is the one to make. Snow has not made a smart trade or a dumb on in 5 years. Last time he was active at all was the Smyth and Zhitnik deals
Do you think he needs a permission slip from Wang to go, or does Wang go with him and walk him to the room and let him play nicely with the other GMs?
I think the other GMs have a relatively good opinion of him.
He's quiet and doesn't abuse anybody. He holds a demeanor and decor that at least lets his counterparts think that he's aptly dealing with the cards that have been given to him.
I'd have to think the other GMs also know that he's willing to talk and be very realistic and doesn't provide more info than he needs to.
As far as trading is concerned, they know he's simply not giving things away, for better or worse, but won't try to rake a counterpart in the process.
I can't imagine that he makes many waves at GM meetings. He's probably low-key and only contributes with statements beginning with "It's our experience that...".
There have certainly been a number of poor owners in this league, so the GMs kind of know that the grass ain't always greener on the other side. I don't think they look at Snow as some kind of clown for working for Wang, but rather as an up 'n comer whose doing well under 'different' if not 'difficult' circumstances.
They may have another opinion about some of the little things he's done.
Look at the Islander and BST rosters the year he was hired, and look at what they have now. I'm not saying Garth has been perfect, but you're not going to convince me he should be fired.
And he won't be.
There are next to no changes coming.
Just tweaks.
Fans here will express their dismay and frustration. We all know that this team is NOT existing with the intent of doing what's necessary to win.
Until the building situation is clear, we have nothing to expect except (whooaaa, strange wording there) a status quo in which the team will be built up of app. 70% of our own draft picks and a few wayward fellas to round things out and help meet the salary cap floor. Bargain deals for AHLers will be considered (see Moulson and Parenteau). The waiver wire may be used positively (Nabokov, Grabner, Schremp) or negatively (Thompson, Comeau, Wallace). There'll be some under the radar moves like those for Reese and maybe this kid Alexandrov. For other things there'll be no hoopla or explanation, such as the final few rounds of the 2010 draft or the situation with Klementyev, etc.
We all know this isn't changing. If winning occurs, it'll be on the backs of the young men who are here in this organization now and maybe one or two good finds along the way.
Knowing that we're just a big gun up front and head honcho on D away from the playoffs is what's real bitter around these parts. Picking up Parise and Suter this summer could change EVERYTHING!
I hope a draft pick does well and we can snag the next Moulson or Parenteau, but on defense. I doubt it will happen, but it's the only way it will.
The good news is that chances are, the team will draft fine. With a top 5 pick, there's little that can go wrong and I don't worry about what the team does in later rounds. We've got plenty of reason to be happy about what's going on with the scouting staff that Snow can make use of.
As for that next MM or PAP, but on defense, just wait til you see this Alexandrov kid!:-)

And he's only now building up a surplus of assets in the organization. As we develop some surplus assets, it's easier to make some trades with those assets where they have surplus for areas where they have holes.
Why do so many Islanders fans seem to think the only two ways to manage a franchise are to either make absolutely no impact moves ever or make moves that involve trading our entire prospect pool for Trevor Linden? Believe it or not, folks, there are successful GMs in this league that fall in between the Snow model of glacial "progress" and the Milbury model of slash and burn...
I'd honestly rather Snow did nothing instead of blowing up the team.
Part of a rebuild is giving your young guys time to adapt to the league as well as playing with eachother. Continue to impliment youth, try to make a decent signing or two, and hope these guys develop the way you expect them to.
I personally feel this team is pretty close to competing for the playoffs. We do need to bring in a quality veteran defenseman, but outside of that I don't see much that needs to be done other than drafting the right prospect this year and just letting these guys grow together as a team.
question: does anyone think that Wang is subtley punishing SMG for refusing to renegotiate with him? if SMG makes money from concession and parking, Wang does what he can to take that away from them. example: exhibition games out of town.
plus, putting an inferior product on the ice, means less attendance, ergo less for SMG?
the re-build provides a solid foundation for the future, which is smart, all the while hitting SMG in the pocketbook.
i don't think that Wang wants to punish loyal fans, or that he doesn't want to win. a winning team means more money for him, yes? i think that he's just in a tight spot, and chose this course of action as the result of being in a dilemma.
just wondering what you guys think, seeing that most of you are privy to local news, that some of us, being distant, don't have access to...

Isn't that what everyone is saying? I can see two posters trolling the usual "why does everyone want to trade the entire team away like Milbury would" baloney when no one is, but ultimately one significant hole has been identified on defense which is a must-fill position. It is going to take years to fill it waiting for our tiny pool of defensive prospects to yield it's solution. No UFAs of value will fill it, just like the last years proved. It has to be filled by a trade. Garth knows it, yet he won't do it. So we head into the next season knowing a bottom five finish awaits while the Snow/Wang apologists try to defend the organization's insulting stand on the issue.

Umm...>SMG recieves a small flat fee to manage the NVMC while Wang gets ALL PARKING, CONCESSION REVENUE AND ADVERTISING, SEATING, GATE AND LUXURY BOX REVENUES.
I put it in bold because it's been a few years now and the deal makes Wang lotsa money compare to the olden days. Wang essentially OWNS the arena with the current agreement and will likely get the same agreement in any extension.
Only, hopefully, with refurbishment or replacement of the NVMC.
I'd honestly rather Snow did nothing instead of blowing up the team.

It's sad that the goal of Islander fans is the make the playoffs. Finishing in 8th place makes the the average of of the conference (8/15). Not only this, but I saw no reason over the past season to suggest that this team can even compete to be the average team.
